doubt he's very concerned about being to afford to pay to finish out his college degree
I don't think he was talking about Laird specifically. Probably himself

i honestly think, for baseball, they should make kids declare or not declare for the draft. it takes this bullshite "negotiating" power out of the equation and doesn't allow kids to get screwed by wanting to finish school
I think baseball has the best draft set-up. Image if basketball had a similar set-up. Up it to 3 or 4 rounds. If you get drafted out of high school, great. If not, you'll be in college for 3 or 4 years. No more of the one and done. No more debating if a player should declare or not.

Kid is from OCS. He probrobly has good grades and most likely has no debt. He should take his 150k and run. He is almost guaranteed to get a fraction of that next year. Kids family could easily afford for him to finish later if needed. Anybody saying is kid should stay either has no idea how the draft works or doesnt care about these kids.

Because he is what he is. He will not become a better prospect, and as a Senior next year he'd have zero negotiating leverage
If he's getting offered 100k this year, it's safe to say that teams already know he has zero negotiation leverage now huh? It's not like it can get any worse. It makes sense to come back and try to improve his draft stock more.

Some people don't understand the work and effort these athletes put in.
A chance to get even a $100,000 to start a professional career is better than most entry level jobs for that one and only shot

$100k to do what one loves to do is a gift!
Plus, it's not like many even get close that kind of a starting salary, let alone even at the end of their careers.

Exactly.
I don't know why people think he will improve his draft any more.. He's not that kind of player that another season could bolster him into higher range.. For instance a power guy or a guy who needs to really drive up his average.
Laird has an average arm, good speed, and a contact hitter. It's actually much more of a risk for him to return than worth it.

that's not really very much money, and given taxes, commission, and the salary he'd make as a minor leaguer, I suspect it would be pretty much gone after a year, but he should do it to for the experience of being a pro baseball player, wish him the best

Because he doesn't want to put up with Mainieri BS for another year!!!

Another thing where you get drafted actually has an impact on if you get cut or not.
Let's say you have a pitcher, having decent stats who was taken in the 35th round vs a pitcher slightly worse stats but taken in the 9th round. They would likely cut the former rather than the later because of $$$.
Laird made the right choice.

That's only if you are assuming this is his ONLY shot. Why wouldnt he be able to make that same amount of money next year?

because he'll be a senior and will get far less in guaranteed money. this has been explained ad nauseam in several different threads

that's slot value for a junior drafted where he was....and yes it can get worse. he can get offered about a 10th of that next year unless he's able to move up to the first couple rounds (he won't)

That's the thing. 100k is nothing. How can he get less than that? I get that his slot money in the 9th round is 162k, but why is it just assumed that he will be drafted later next year? Why shouldnt you assume that he will improve and be drafted higher?

Playing for $100K plus $ 1100/ month is chump
change. He will be on endless bus rides for
6 months a year-- hang around for 2-3yrs then
Quit--- he should play for one more year become
an All-American--- if he still wants to ride on
endless bus rides after that--- but just suppose
He bats .400--- he will get paid.

He has some leverage now (turn the offer down to return to school)
He has zero leverage next year (turn the offer down and end baseball career).
Odd are slim that he has a year that would increase his draft position enough to get a bigger offer. Take 100k now or 80k next year

Seniors usually get drafted later than juniors because they know they can sign them for little to nothing, while juniors need some convincing to sign, so on average a junior will get more than a senior.
