You are some what correct! Chad does not get the respect he deserves. If I remember it took him like 2 years just to get his grades to get in at LSU and then once he was there he was the fricking man!

I've always been a huge Lavalais fan. He was the heart and soul of that DL and was always firing up the team/fans.

This!

Kyle Williams is another one that was a beast!

IMO, these should be on the list as well:
John Wood ('72)
Kenny Bordelon '75)
A.J. Duhe ('76)
Karl Wilson ('86)

But since this is for Chad, I think his '03 season was the best single-season of any DL ever. How's that?

Thanks. I'm a little fuzzy on the pre-90's D-linemen, and I always get confused about whether Duhe played more LB than D-line.

A. J. played DL at LSU but LB at Miami. Jon Street was our MLB in '76.

Although I'd give a slight edge to the '03 as our all-time best, the '82 DL (Marshall, Dardar, Elko) and '86 (Wilson, Thomas, and Barbay) were also great DL's.

How about Rydell Melancon, LSU's all-time sack leader? Did anyone ever see him play?

Also,

Ron Sancho
Chuck Wiley
Jarvis Green
Melvin Oliver (20 career sacks)

He played OLB in '82. Tim Joiner was the other OLB that year.

Rydell Melancon was outstanding and Joiner was no slouch either.

ETA: Was Claude Wroten on that line too?

I don't think so, but Kyle Williams started 8 games in 2003, and Mel Oliver played some, including the Sugar Bowl.

Now that you mention it, the 2005 front was no slouch with Oliver, Kyle Williams, Wroten and Chase Pittman.

I actually have no idea. I never saw him play. I just saw he had 23 sacks from 85-88. He could have been a linebacker. If Melancon was a LB and Sancho was too, we must have run an insane amount of LB blitzes in the 80's cause those guys are #1 & #2 on LSU's all-time sack list with 25 & 23.

LB blitzes are more common and more likely to succeed in a 3-4, which LSU used to play back in the 80's.

Sancho played OLB (opposite Eric Hill).

Ah, ok. That explains it then. I had no idea we ran a 3-4 in the 80's. I was born in '82, so I have faint memories of games from the late 80's, but wouldn't have been able to identify a 3-4 D. When I saw Melancon and Sancho on the all-time sack list I just figured they were DEs. But thanks for the info

inadaze and ace beat me to it.

I was going to bring up Oliver and Pittman. That was an exceptional DL. I still remember that INT Oliver had in the Cotton Bowl.

I also convinced myself that it was Wroten not Williams in '03, should have gone with the gut...

Kyle Williams was an absolute beast! Still is pretty good!

I was at the Ole Piss game in '03, Lavalais was one of my favorites that year, and is a very memorable LSU lineman.
