Why is there suddenly an argument over a hypothetical 9-3 football record in 2019?

Just catching up on a few threads and it seems there are suddenly people saying they’d be ok with this record. Up until now it was pretty much unanimous opinion that expectations are higher than that THIS year.

With the pieces that are in place (credit to O), and barring catastrophic injuries, 9-3 would be a huge disappointment. It would not get the coach fired this year, but it would be a strong indicator that this is his ceiling.

I’ve been an O supporter, not right when he was hired, but I have started to get onto the train. If he goes any worse than 10-2 regular season, he definitely should be on the hot seat.

Why is there some fictional high water mark being put on the team by fans that doesn’t mean jack shite in the grand scheme of things?

What's your expectation for this year?

It’s the same water mark that actually got the last coach fired. I’m just going by history.

Are you asking why LSU football has standards?

It always happens. O pumpers love to build up expectations and scream at anyone who mentions anything but praise about O, then when it gets closer to the season, they temper expectations to hedge in case he falters. It's an odd dynamic for sure, as you'd think die-hard fans of his would expect 11, 12 wins no problem.

Most people are saying they would be disappointed with 9-3

I don't see how anyone could find this unreasonable. We return a bunch of experience in key positions, bring in some freshman at areas of need, and have an easier schedule.

That Coach O and his team go out there and give it their best shot and have fun while they're doing it!

Really?

What if it looked like this:

GSU - W
UT - L
NWST - W
Vandy - W
USU - W
Florida - L
State - W
Auburn - W
Bama - W
Miss - L
Ark - W
A&M - W

You think that would be a "huge disappointment"?

I don't.

I’m not saying it’s a majority, but there are enough that it’s become a recent argument when it wasn’t even debated before.

If we go win at Bama and lose to UF at home and Ole miss, yea it's a major disappointment.

My point was that fan arguments over what win total is good enough or acceptable is pointless chatter.

Then what are you doing being active on an LSU fan message board if this is all pointless chatter?

What should fans be allowed to talk about?

Every team should be shooting for a National Championship, not a participation trophy.
