I have been living under a rock or something apparently because I have only just heard of this FBI investigation situation. It was my understanding that paying a student athlete, though, is against NCAA rules, it isn't a crime under US Law. Was there a different different motivation for the investigation or some form widespread tax-evasion due to bribes being under the table. Or do I have it wrong and it is for some reason illegal to pay a student athlete for their time?

This is their main motivation. They sort of stumbled into the NCAA side while investigating one of the money guys for another reason IIRC.

Nothing to do with NCAA rules. Has to do bribery and tax evasion involving agents and shoe companies.

It all streams out of a money laundering / security fraud case started by FBI. The guy cuts a deal and starts ratting out people and they followed the money.

We thought a number of years ago the same thing was about to happen in the Milton McGregor trial where the FBI wiretapped the major lobbying firm in Alabama for 4 months and picked up conversation concerning schemes to pay players at Auburn. (The infamous ATPB thread) However, they somehow managed to lose the damn case against McGregor (who told any and everyone is we down he was taking everyone with him including Bentley). Then “the machine” decided as much fun as it was watching Auburn squirm the damage was likely to spread, Auburn’s money man was in trouble anyway, so they made sure it ended there. I assume someone has the “tape” somewhere.

This was all so obvious in basketball and rumors are that it’s going to cross into football as well.

You really believe the NCAA is not looking at this with a microscope?

"NEW YORK -- Attorneys for the defendants in a federal criminal case involving pay-for-play schemes and other corruption in college basketball attempted on Tuesday to introduce into evidence wiretap recordings that, according to the attorneys, suggested LSU coach Will Wade and Kansas assistant Kurtis Townsend were prepared to offer improper benefits to high-profile recruits and their families.

"Donnelly did not provide a date of the call; the FBI monitored one of Dawkins' cellphones between June 19, 2017, and Sept. 15, 2017, according to court records.

According to the transcript that Donnelly read, Dawkins called Wade and inquired about LSU's interest in 2019 recruit Balsa Koprivica, a 7-foot center from Montverde, Florida.

"So you said to me in Atlanta there was a 2019 kid I wanted to recruit, they can get him to LSU, you would have funded," Dawkins told Wade, according to Donnelly. "Would you want Balsa?"

"Oh, the big kid?" Wade asked.

"Yeah," Dawkins confirmed.

"OK. But there's other (expletive) involved in it," Wade said. "I have got to shut my door ... Here's my thing: I can get you what you need, but it's got to work."

On June 21, 2017, Koprivica tweeted: "Blessed to say I have received an offer from LSU."

in case anyone is interested I did some digging and found indictment. doj

For those with limited time below is the most important part IMO

"DAKIN,AUGUSTINE,SOOD and others known and unknown including basketball coaches employed by university 6 and 7 participated in a scheme to defraud, by telephone, email, and wire transfers of funds, among other means and methods University 6 and 7 by making and concealing bribe payments to high school student athletes and or families in exchange for, among other things, the student athletes commitment to play basketball for University 6 and 7 which deprived the universities of their rights to control the use of their assets, including the decision of how to allocate limited amount of athletic scholarships, and which if revealed would have further exposed the universities to tangible economic harm, including monetary and other penalties imposed by the NCAA."

I'm no lawyer, though to me it seems they have been indicted basically for breaking NCAA rules. Seems Like it could be a very interesting precedent if found guilty.

That is as incriminating as it can be. Sounds really bad. How/why was that conversation recorded? Who recorded it? Was it a sting operation? I’m afraid Wade and his amazing recruiting success was indeed too good to be true. Hope this blows over, but I don’t see how it does.

The NCAA is a business. They don't care as long as it doesn't affect their bottom line. Folks have known for years the shoe companies are dirty.
The big name basketball schools, Duke, Carolina, are above the fray. Its the same with Alabama, Texas, Notre Dame in football.

To further expound what I found in the article ect. It seems that the shoe sponsors adidia's, nike ect that have sponsorship with a university work with college basketball coaches to bribe recruits.

It seems the coaches will talk to these middle men like dawkins and will say I want x player or the middle men will say I have these players to choose from. The middle men will in turn procure funds from sponsor company like Nike I'm assuming for LSU. In turn the university will provide advertisement for sponsor. All so money doesn't have to change hands between coaches/universities and anyone.

So If Wade says he didn't do business with these people he is technically correct as money didn't exchange hands though he still could have influenced situation which does suck. Seems like Dawkins was trying to drag wade through the mud which makes one wonder his real motivation for doing so, threat, bribes, bad blood ect.

It seems like the consequences would be of such a system would be that the school with the largest market exposure would have the largest "Budget" for buying high profile recruits. Just kinda shows the extent that capitalism will find its way to suck the fun out of everything.

That wasn’t the question. The OP asked why is the FBI investigating college basketball. The answer is they are not. The FBI is investigating agents and shoe companies.

College basketball is collateral damage.

Why do people keep saying this? It could be a lot worse. He could have been much more specific and said exactly what he was paying for and how much. There could have been a paper trail that was submitted into evidence.

Could more be uncovered if the decide to investigate further? Absolutely. However, if that’s all the evidence available, then nothing will happen.
