I realize that the post was not a serious question, but back in the mid-1990's I actually attended the debate on the floor of the legislature that ultimately led to the state schools having the option to be UL at _____. A legislator from the Lake Charles area specifically queried whether the law was in any way designed to force schools to change their names, emphasizing that McNeese was named after a man and that there was no interest in changing the name. Of course, it was confirmed that UL appellation was just an option.

Southeastern wanted to keep some sort of an identity. They have gone that route, by being called Southeastern and trying to eliminate the old SLU. Also, Southeastern has over 15,000 students, 3rd biggest in state.

So if Southwestern LA and Northeast LA wanted to drop their directional names to become ULL and ULM, why didn't Southeastern LA become ULH?

Southwestern wanted to become UL . They were allowed to change their name on 2 conditions.

1) they would have to use the city name w/ UL ie ULL.
2) they would have to get at least one other UL system scool to join them.

Most of the other schools didn't want to change because they were satisfied with their name , the cost of making a change and/or not trusting the motives of Soutwestern in making the name change.

Southwestern could not get any other school to agree to the name change including Northeastern who was strongly oppossed to the change. Southwestern smoozed Northeastern into trusting them . Northeastern went along and was immediately double crossed by Southwestern who minimized the name Lafayette . Before long and with the assistance of the Lafayette media , the ULL sports teams became UL and then Louisiana.

Southeastern might have seen this coming and wanted no part in it ???

The administrators in Monroe were the only one stupid enough to bend over for their counterparts from Lafayette.

This would be the correct answer.
