But don't you think he should mix things up and not follow crowtons mind set?

In what way was he following Crowton's mindset?

Why doesn't chavis execute a defence like the jets? We have all the weapons....

In college you want a consistent scheme and system every year for the players to learn and get comfortable with. It can be tweaked from year to year depending on your strengths, but the idea is to be consistent to benefit the players.

In the NFL the players are paid professionals, and have the free time and practice time to learn more complex schemes.

I think the more appropriate question would be why doesn't he run a defense like the Saints. The strength of Greg Williams D is the backfield, should be the same for LSU this season.

Read an interesting quote by GW a couple weeks ago saying that in the new NFL (more passing), you have to build your defense from the outside in.

Yea Williams' philosophy would be much easier to implement. The way they force turnovers and then practice returns for these turnovers was just a site to watch last year. When we picked passes off, the defense immediately turned into a punt return team and was paving the way for the TD.

Also, your point about building the defense from the outside in is completely correct; it's no coincidence the Jets and Saints both drafted CBs in the first round. I read an article where an NFL GM said CBs were now tied with DEs for most valuable players. He had it:

1. QB
2. LT
3A. DE
3B. CB

my thoughts exactly about the word

Here is another completely meaningless observation.

I do find it interesting how the promise of a simple question or comment on the board by some well meaning fan turns into a mushroom cloud of insults, accusations, or a chance to sing the praises of one coach while at the expense of another. I guess it's because I am 62 and not 22 or 32, but whatever happened to civility?

To those of you that made actual comments about schemes or the type of players we have for the defense, great. The Buddy Ryan stuff made me think. I felt like I learned something.

I also tried to spell check and grammatically assess my thoughts lest that generates a new insult or comment.

the basic theme I was driving at...

And the crowton/chavis comparsion was mearly an example of chavis needing not to be like crowton, to be so stubborn and stuck on "his ways" rather than play with what works (I.e. Option to the short side) I said he didn't need to be like crowton, not that he was like crowton. Can you comprehend the difference?

can they handle an NFL playbook? No

can they run the same types of formations as an NFL team? Yes

such as the wildcat, spread, 2te set, 3-4 and 4-3, trick plays, etc. Or did you have 1 formation on your pee wee team?

Your attempt at trolling does nothing but show that you're a douche and begging for attention

Chief has been running the same defense for 20 years. I as a fan who likes winning would rather have him stick to his defense and not rex ryan's style of D. What chavis is all about is playing fast and not having his players thinking instead of reacting and playing downhill. There would be mass confusion if chavis had 1000 different blitz packages like RR.

Secondly, why don't we wait for a season where chavis and our D aren't on the field for 40 minutes a game to judge their defensive prowess. Let's wait until we have an upgraded D line. From watching a lot of UT games as a kid living in west TN, i can tell you that Chief wants a strong defensive line that can get pressure with 4 instead of having to blitz on every 3rd and 6. If our D line is good enough to do that, then we'll be seeing PP and MC flying down the field a lot because of pick 6's because we let them play zone and let them keep one eye on the receiver and another eye on the ball.
