Wasn’t that a big part of his appeal? Speedster than can take the top off a defense?

Maybe we’re calling it and Sam just never lets it rip? But surprised how little we use the deep ball.
There's a lot of moving parts and new pieces in this offense, and Sam had less than a month to really start working with the players and the new playbook.

Oh, and Sam had his own troubles overcoming his run-first mentality (it took a hamstring injury to force him to stay in the pocket and figure out how to throw more passes).

After 7 games, I see LSU's offense as a work in progress that seems to be trending in the right direction. My hope is that the growth and improvement continues for the rest of the year, and that we retain enough of the core players (including Sam) for next year and a full off-season of work. If that happens I'd bet we'll see a 2nd-year improvement like we did with Jayden and Joe (no, I am NOT saying he'll be come like either, just that I think the same level of improvement should happen).

Unlike the collapse of Reed at aTm, I only see improvement for Sam. Reed was always a gadget player with good legs and poor game awareness. He and the aggies caught a lot of people by surprise when he subbed in during the second half of the game in Tiger Stadium, but he's never really been anything better than what he was when he first broke out. Sam has shown more growth in 5 games than Reed has in the last season and a half - in fact, he's regressed.

So, TL/DR - I think we'll see more deep shots to Tre and others as the season goes on. When Tre'Dez returns and opens up more midrange shots that'll also open up the deep ball. And if Sam returns I believe those shots will be much more common (and effective) next year.

For that reason alone, I would love to see SL roll out to the right side (not left throwing across his body) on occasion, to move the pocket and give our speed receivers enough time to get behind the defenders. Not all the time, but more than we do, if we do it at all as a designed play call. I am still waiting for some well executed screens to the outside. That will make our Olinmen's job of not blocking the rusher in front of them that much easier.
