The catcher had the ball and Breaux had time to see that, think about it, and make an attempt to maneuver around him. That's how not close it was. And catcher was perfectly positioned in the base path. It was easy.
And it had already happened once, on an even tougher play....
it's not rocket science

Yep he was clearly out. But it is a matter of odds compared to the decision not to send him. I responded to the OP and defend that decision. Cain doesn't have the benefit of hindsight and I think the call was legit.

He obviously knows more about baseball than me hopefully. I was okay with the first and not okay with the second play at the plate. I'm not going to berate anyone over the Internet about it. I guess some miracle could have happened to make home safe lol.

I guess our differences lie in whether a miracle would be required. Without the benefit of knowing the outcome.

I still don't know how Cain ended up at 3rd let alone plugging him in without ever coaching 1st. I believe the position is a coach by feel and comes with experience.

To not have a scouting report on Ole Miss is shocking.

Because Canezaro needs to be closer to the players when they are warming up and getting ready to hit. Javi was fine being away from the hitters, he wasn't any help anyway. Who would you like to coach there, CPM? Like Tim Corbin does for Vandy?

So pitchers agree that you should send someone who will be out every time unless the throw hits the backstop? Though I originally didn't think there was any merit to the argument that pitchers are incapable of coaching third because they are pitchers, this is pretty good evidence that maybe they aren't.

As I noted in the other thread, the call to send Renn was so incredibly risky with very little potential for payoff:

cons:

outfielder is playing shallow
ball is not deep
outfield arm is near the top of the conference
out ends the inning against an Ole Miss team that is undefeated when leading after 6
no real chance of scoring unless an error is committed
Getting a guy home from third even with two outs is easier than getting a guy all the way around with 3 outs at your disposal.
your best hitter is coming up in a big spot

pros:

can't wait around for a two out hit
we are aggressive
we made them make a play (albeit an easy play)

To see that I'm not being stupid about the "pros," here is where it comes from:

quote:

“You can’t wait around for a two-out hit,” Cain said. “Duplantis battled his heart out, he gets a hit. All their outfielders are playing in, but there’s two strikes, two outs and Brennan’s going on the swing. You have to make that guy make that throw, and he did.”

No,Cain now has made three(3) mistakes this OM series... three LSU runners out at homeplate by a mile in two games and Romero, our best hitting catcher suspended for second and final OM game.....all mistakes made challenging OM's centerfielder outstanding throwing arm from shallow centerfield !

If Cain challenges one more time in third OM game expecting a different result and another LSU baserunner
get thrown out at home I'm calling 911 and the white jackets to take Cain/Maineri away.

Dont get mad at the OP because he has a set of eyes and can see that Paul Mainierii's philosophy of "let's hope the Division 1 outfielder makes a little league throw" runs us into more outs than it's worth.

You serious? You've got to send those runners. Tip your cap to the CF.

With two outs, you send him. With one out, you don't. You hold him at third and you have a chance to score him with a hit or a sac fly.
