Why do the computers favor the Big 12 over the SEC?
Since the Big 12 is down to 10 teams, they played 9 conference games and only three out-of-conference (OOC) games

How much did only playing three OOC games help the Big 12 when it comes to strength of schedule?
Chicken , it does really seem like the computers love a 9 game conference schedule, regardless of it's merits. Do you remember several years ago when the PAC 10 (actually USCw + 9)switched from an 8 game to a 9 game schedule w/the computers going crazy w/ the PAC 10's SOS ? It gave them a totally unearned and highest rated SOS.

It is a function of being in a 10 team conference as opposed to a 12 team conference. Take Texas A&M as an example from the Big-XII. They have 9 conference opponents that they get credit for playing. They also get credit for their 9 conference opponets' opponents. That means they get credit for playing Oklahoma State once plus 8 of their opponents played Oklahoma State. That repeats itself for every conference opponent. Compare that with LSU. LSU plays Alabama, but LSU only has 6 other opponents who played Alabama. LSU doesn't get that extra bump from opponents' opponents that Texas A&M does.
Last year the 10 member Pac-10 had the highest SOS rankings and the 12 member Big-XI was middle of the pack. This year the 12 member Pac-12 is middle of the pack in SOS rankings and the 10 member Big-XII has the highest ranking. It is a result of the boost they get from the extra conference game's impact on opponents' opponents' record.

i personally think that the Upper Brass of the Big 12 has some increminating photos of some upper brass people in the NCAA....someone had to put a few more lines of code in those computers for them to be that far off to favor the Big 12 over the SEC...

It's because, IMO, that more Big 12 teams have been more successful in big games rather than SEC teams, with the exception of LSU and Alabama. Arkansas is kinda there but those games against Troy, Ole Miss and Vandy hurt the SEC this year.
Florida doesn't look like Florida.
Auburn looks frazzled.
Ole Miss is horrible.
Moo State hit the skids.
TN is nowhere near what it used to be.
South Carolina was ok until Lattimore got hurt.
Georgia isn't the Georgia they used to be. The got beat by a pretender in their first game of the season followed by a loss to South Carolina.
They struggled with Kentucky this past weekend. In Athens!

quote:yeah because Auburn, Florida, Ole Miss, and Tennessee all have good defenses right?
The Big 12 has terrible defenses, and their best teams have losses to mediocre teams.
Also, nobody is arguing the Big-12's top 2 or 3 are better than SEC top 2 or 3, we're saying the SEC is very top heavy and Big-12 has better overall conference this year

quote:it doesn't just look crappy it is, outside of UGA and maybe USCe the bottom 7 are pathetic
It looks crappy cus the top 3 teams are in one division. That is an automatic 3 losses for the other 3 teams in the west and a total of 9 losses on the east side.

What I don't understand is the older generations, say 50+, believe you have to play a hard schedule to get any respect. It really doesn't matter who you play as long you are in a BCS conference and you win. South Florida got all the way up to #2 in the BCS in 2007 and they weren't that good. Boise plays a shite schedule every year and is left out ONLY because they don't play in a conference. If they were the Big East champion they would have had a shot by now. Just win your BCS conference and you're in.
your point only goes so far...
the closer to the end of the year , the more significant the FORMULA becomes. Also, the diff between team is smaller and smaller, so while playing in a conf would help, it is because the perceived consistency in strength, not just a conf, per say and this gets exposed at year's end.
,,here is anther side..by being in a conf. they are likely to be seen more often on TV and a lot of the voters only get to see the games there.

basing SOS on opponents and opponents opponents records is not good enough. if a team plays teams that play mediocre teams and none of them step out and play ranked teams then they receive an artificially strong SOS. i realize this is a damn difficult thing to measure, but i think they can do better. for boise to have a higher SOS than LSU proves it's inaccuracies in measuring what they want to measure. my first impression is to make adjustments based on playing rated teams. for boise to face only one ranked team (UGA) and compile a higher score than LSU who faced bama, oregon, west virginia, et all is ludicrous. boise would have been fortunate to have a winning record against LSU's schedule. playing in a tough confernce actually HURTS YOUR SOS because your opponents and their opponents records reflect playing better teams. bull shite.
