You need to read Sean O'Keefe's letter to PETA. He lays out a compelling argument relative to our mascot.

Yes I realize the life span of tigers are almost double captive vs wild. But what would humans do? Live 80 years in a prison with every amenity or live 40 years but life as normal?

And I also realize as others pointed out in this thread we are simply providing a captive Tiger another home most likely better than where they came from. Still does not address the root cause which is why are wild tigers being taken captive and put in shitty conditions only to be rescued to become
Mike X?

Yes I know that is what this dumb arse debate about the tiger had done to my psyche. If u think about it's a pretty damn good snapshot of where society is heading.

I am sure wild animals would prefer to live outside of cages, fences, etc. But that is far too simplistic a question. Carnivores would also prefer to eat humans too, but we do not simply say that carnivores should be allowed to eat humans because they might prefer it. We haven't reached a state of affairs where animals get to vote. PETA often takes irrational and illogical positions and gives little thought to the consequences for the animals they purport to benefit.. A captive tiger might prefer to live in the wild, but for most captive tigers that would be a death sentence. They don't have the skills to survive in the wild. Mike was born and raised in captivity. He is a hybrid and not something that would be found in natural conditions. He would not survive in fhe wild. Nor would the tiger who will replace him when the time comes. No tiger in the wild will be captured to serve as the next Mike. Almost all tigers, if not all tigers in captivity today in the US, are bred in captivity.

People are up in arms that PETA would have the nerve to ask us to not get another tiger like its our privilege, yet none of them can even answer the question of where a tiger would actually prefer to live.
Before his current illness, has LSU's tiger ever looked or acted like he is miserable to you? He hasn't when I've visited his habitat. Also, since you're concerned about the tiger's state of mind, consider this. A tiger is taught to hunt and kill food by its mother. Tigers born into captivity and later released into the wild are unable to learn this skill. So why would you think a captive tiger like LSU's Mike, whose every need is attended to daily, would somehow miss a wild environment he would be unable to cope with and has never known?

These tigers aren't being taken out of the wild! The tigers LSU get are breed and born in captivity.

The issue with tigers going extinct is loss of habitat and the Chinese eating their parts.
If you could turn roscoe back to the wild where would you find the habitat?

I myself lean liberal and am an unabashed Democrat except on gun issues. But at the same time time life is not black and white. I believe that Mike VI has benefited from captivity and he seems to be a happy animal judging from my many visits to him over the years. He is the Tiger I knew most intimately as I attended my alma mater and his habitat is not comparable to the one in Grosse Tete. He is the heart and soul of this University and our esteemed SVM has earned the right to continue to care for a captive tiger in the future as long as the species is held in the highest regard.

You made the comment that wild tigers were being taken to be rescued as Mike. When someone responds that wild tigers aren't being taken captive (at least legally) and brought to the US, you ignore your own comment act like they are dumb. A new Mike whether VII or X will not come from the wild, nor is it likely that his parents will be wild tigers.

Re-read the sentence. Slower this time. I said wild tigers are being taken captive. And in captivity they are in shitty conditions. And therefore, LSU rescues a shitty captive situation and makes it a better captive situation.

Why don't we have our arms up in the air at all the frickin Africans torturing and killing wild animals? which is the main reason we put them in captivity. Let's start killing those frickers first then that would solve the entire problem.

Tigers in their natural habitat are being poached for fur. If you don't want them to go extinct it would be a good idea for Mike VII. Maybe even get him a female and let him start a family. Surely his 11 million dollar mansion would be big enough

Because they're being poached and killed at an alarming rate.
