Why Alabama is Alabama and LSU is LSU

Alabama is a function of coaching. They are not some innate winning machine. With the Bear and with Saban they are great. In between, they weren't. They were still Bama, though. But that 4-letter word didn't win games or beat LSU 5 in a row.
If Saban had figures out he was a college coach before going to Miami, LSU would have 3-4 national titles and Bama would be running through coaches. There is nothing more to the Bama mistique than plain and simple coaching. They have won a lot and now have the expectation of great coaching, so that's what they accept.
LSU is LSU because, while it has won and won big, there is no expectation of great coaching. LSU will settle for above average because that's what they've been historically. LIke Alabama, LSU is a function of coaching. Seek out great coaching and LSU will be great. Saban will retire or leave in the next few years and then they will be above average again until and unless they get a great coach.
Miles had his turn and had moments, but he was not a great coach. The product on the field always said differently. In '07, his best year, he lost to 2 .500 teams. 2011 was the one year he really flirted with greatness.
The point is, LSU gets to decide how the next 10-15 years will play out. It's not fate or destiny. Find a great coach and expect him to be great. If he's not, find another one. That's what makes Alabama Alabama.

I think we were pretty great with Gene Stallings. He went 70-16, with 3 SEC West titles, 1 SEC title, and 1 consensus national title in 7 years. Possibly would have added more hardware but that's when Spurrier first began rolling at Florida and he proved to be Stallings' kryptonite.

It is simple. AL alumni recruiting machine is way better than anyone else. When they get a coach who is a great recruiter they are tops. AL has twice as many elite players on their roster as anyone else and everyone in the US should be playing for 2nd place. It is not numbers like 6 to 4 or 10 to 5 but 34 -17 on an average. They have an overwhelming advantage if talent. They probably should lose fewer games than they do.

He's right. But he missed another big point: LSU is not, and never will be a destination point.
We are not Texas, Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, USC, FSU, or Nebraska for that matter. This is not a destination point for a great coach.
If it was, Nick Saban would have stayed. Saban won a NC here, and even he knew this was not where he wanted to be. The fan base was horrendous after a bad year the next year, the administration wasn't any better.
LSU will never retain or acquire a 'great' coach, because as an organization, they don't recognize greatness when they have it.
With inferior talent Les beat Bob Stoops twice, Jim Tressell, Urban Meyer twice, Nick Saban 3 times, even Chip Kelly, the guy they are clamouring for.
In his time, Les has owned Steve Spurrier, Tommy Tuberville, a handful of Alabama and Florida coaches...LSU has unreal expectations. They want the best coach in the NCAA. He is unavailable. Les' resume and his win total is better than anyone's out there
