When shaq has a movie made about his childhood then he can be the greatest.

Pistol is more of a "legend" than shaq is.

I love Maravich but it's hard to argue with Shaq's four titles, MVP award and 15 All-Star appearances.

If we're arguing who had a better college career, perhaps you can give a slight edge to Maravich, though he never led LSU to the NCAA Tournament and an SEC title as Shaq did. In terms of who has a stronger basketball legacy overall, it's Shaq. And his LSU boosterism on Inside the NBA and elsewhere is appreciated.

As far as national recognition:

Football - Billy Cannon, only LSU Heisman winner.
Basketball - Shaquille O'Neal, only LSU Rupp awardee.
Baseball - Ben McDonald, only LSU Golden Spikes winner.

FYI, there have been four LSU athletes who have won the SEC Athlete of the Year award: Shaq, Walter Davis, the X-man and Seimone Augustus. I expect Kimberlyn Duncan to make it a fifth this year. However, the award has only existed since 1976.

If LSU were to have its own Mount Rushmore, it would have no validity if it didn't include someone from track & field, which has brought home 32 of the school 43 national championships.

That doesn't sound like a rebuttal to my post. But when folks can't handle the message, they go after the messenger.

This and it would have been over 50 with a three point line. And the passes were more spectacular than the scoring. There will be another Shaq but there will never be another Pete!

Look I think Pistol Pete is probably the greatest college basketball player of all time, and I understand he revolutionized the game.. but I don't think we will ever see another player as dominate as Shaq was..

Some NBA Finals stats for reference:

2000 -- Shaquille O'Neal, L.A. Lakers
Averaged 38.0 points, 16.7 rebounds and 2.67 blocks to lead the Lakers to a 4-2 victory over the Indiana Pacers and the franchise’s first NBA Championship since 1988. O’Neal’s best Finals performances came at the Staples Center with 43 points, 19 rebounds in Game #1, 40 points, 24 rebounds in Game #2 and 41 points, 12 rebounds in Game #6.

2001 -- Shaquille O'Neal, L.A. Lakers
Averaged 33.0 points, 15.6 rebounds and 3.40 blocks to lead the Lakers to a 4-1victory over the Philadelphia 76ers and the franchise’s second consecutive NBA Championship. O’Neal’s best Finals performances came at the Staples Center with 44 points, 20 rebounds and five assists in Game #1, 28 points, 20 rebounds and nine assists in Game #2 and 34 points, 14 rebounds in Game #4.

2002 -- Shaquille O'Neal, L.A. Lakers
Averaged 36.3 points, 12.3 rebounds and 2.75 blocks to lead the Lakers to a sweep of the New Jersey Nets and the franchise’s third consecutive NBA Championship. O’Neal’s best Finals performances came at the Staples Center with 36 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks in Game #1, 40 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in Game #2, 35 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks in Game #3.

Pete was great, there's no doubt about that, but he couldn't spell defense and he didn't really make his teammates better. Great college basketball players can usually take their teams deep into the tournament regardless of who they're playing with. Bird took a bunch of nobodies to the championship game at Indiana State and David Robinson took four Midshipmen to the Sweet 16.

You are obviously young. In Pete's day there wasn't any 64 teams invited to the tournament. You had to win the SEC to get in and Kentucky with it's multiple stars always had more overall firepower. It's a myth that he didn't play defense, just look at the clip of his highest point total in the pros, seventy something against the Knicks. It is on You Tube and he is all over the place making steals, getting rebounds. And how can you possibly say that someone who got as many assists as he did didn't make his teammates better? Also to compare a center and a power forward in college to a point guard is ridiculous. Pete never had a good big man to play with or much of anyone else for that matter.

Kentucky was down when Pete was at LSU and in the midst of a 20 year championship drought, mainly because Rupp was one of the last coaches in the country to integrate. Look at what UTEP did to them the year before he arrived at LSU.

And yet he never made the NBA's all-defense first or second teams his entire career.

Are you saying that it's harder for a guard to put his team on his shoulder than forwards and centers?
