College sports fans under age 30 are a fraction of that population, thus you are talking about a group of people which is primarily comprised of dipshits.

Agreed, but sports fan or not Shaq is bigger than the Beatles were.

In my mind Pistol and Billy Cannon tie for 2nd. Skip is 3rd just because coaches are on a different level.

Ask a randomly chosen group of people worldwide where he went to college...you think many will say LSU?

They would know Pistol Pete did though? I've lived in California, Texas and Florida and people know Shaq is an LSU guy. Worldwide I'm sure they don't care. Nor would they if they knew who Billy Cannon , Les Miles, Skip, Smoke, Cecil Collins or frickin Larry Foster were either.

Shaq has his number retired INSIDE an arena named after Pistol Pete..

Its PM and not even close.

Ummm keep in mind that Pete Maravich gave LSU basketball relevance period... Shaq however has much more cache with the general public and is a far more recogizable figure.

I think people underestimate how well known he is . . . at least in America. I remember the NBA All Star Game devoted a 30 minute documentary to him a couple of years ago.

Pistol Pete is the all time leading Division 1 scoring leader. He did it without a 3 point line and played the now extinct "freshman ball" his first year, which does not calculate into the point total. My little brother and I grew up watching his instructional videos. Shaq may be more worldly known right now, but Shaq is also a current player in a time that every game is televised. I agree Shaq's personality is worldwide, but Shaq's only advantage is that he lived in a more technological/media friendly era.
I feel like the comparison between Pistol and Shaq is equivalent to Prefontaine and Usain Bolt. You can't erase history.
Also, I think any other names mentioned besides Saban and Miles would not be known in other parts of the country.

One of the few times I can remember my father visibly crying was the day Maravich died. The impact and influence that Pistol Pete had on basketball cannot be overstated, and deserves to be told to a new generation of fans. So for #1 overall I'd say Pete Maravich.

If you are looking at football only, I'd say Billy Cannon. But with names like Cannon, Jones, cassanova, Tittle, Dietzel (if you're looking at coaches), it's hard to chose an undisputed "#1"
