How about all the times where "prevent to win" let the offense run up and down the field and score at will in the final minutes of a game or half? He has the defense so tired by the fourth quarter unless LSU has a 20 point lead, the game is always in question. Yes I know the offense does not help much either but Chavis is not that good of a DC. Sure better than last years, but if we were not exposed to that crap, we would be saying the same thing this year as we were about those other two jokers.

LSU was 39th in 3rd down conversion rate...out of 120. The conversion pct was a little over 36% which is certainly not an alarming rate.

The facts just don't support your argument.

I am. He's an enormous improvement. Why not give the man a chance next year with the hope of an improved DL?

Props to Chavis for having the greatest goaline defense in the history of football. I wonder what our ppg would have been if it wasn't that way?

I wonder what the Capital One Bowl score would have been without Chavis' defense?

meh ... he's a huge improvement from the chuckleheads last yr, but I'm not crazy about him. I think he's a solid DC and the defense is in good, steady hands, but nothing spectacular. I feel like Miles and Chavis are both very good coaches but it sure seems like we're overpaying (getting a very nice mock crab dip for cavier prices.)

What about field position?

Chavis' Death by FG defense doesn't give our offense spit to start with, position-wise. If you have a suspect Offense, then would you think the DC would at least try to make a stop on the opponents side of the field? Wouldn't ya?

Chavis = Lazy hire.

Somewhat competent but not nearly the best guy we could have gotten.

I refuse to put myself through the emotional setup of anything other than expecting 8-9 wins, maybe 10 but for sure no SECC or NC until Miles is gone and/or Shep is starting at QB (i.e. JJ is not)

"Third and Chavis". I remember when we got him, all of the Tennessee fans told us about his inability to stop third down conversions. I thought, that's UT, this is LSU. Well, it's Chavis.

However, I do remember seeing the heat turned up a couple of times in the beginning of the season with a few blitzes on third. Maybe he can learn from those for next season.

He has been in the SEC for 20 years. Under the 2 DC situation LSU was ranked 31. This year its 28. So I would have to say no. I dont think it will get much better. I think that if the Off. Gets better it may help the D by taking away plays, but to be fair I would give him 1 more year. I would have never given him a raise.

I'm completely in Chavis' corner. If the Offense would have been on track his defense would have been even better. Look at what our defense did against Penn State and how long they were on the field. If our Offense scores say 10 extra points in the first half we win easily.

Not really because I haven't seen our defense stop a potential game winning drive. (Ark and Penn St) ..... Some of that is due to a completley terrible offense that can't get it done, but I don't like how we gave up 4th quarter drives to both Arkansas and Penn St. I think the bend but dont break scheme only works if you have an offense that can move the ball and give the D a rest, otherwise the D gets tired.

That is the only thing I see wrong with Chavis. The whole 3rd and Chavis thing is blown out of prorportion, every defense gives up 3rd downs now and then.

Scoring D would be given an A. Total defense probably a B- or C.

Think its too early to be determining confidence in Chavis. He needs another year to see what he can do with his players in his scheme.

The numbers speak for themselves. 12th in scoring defense.

I don't care how you get it done, you just have to stop the other team from scoring.

With a better D-line, we will be fine. But that is the big question. Will the D-line be better? We need to recruit some guys that can disrupt our opponents not just hold their own.

you're emotionally setting yourself up if you think Shep at QB is the answer...

I know it is a improvement from last year but Lsu gets killed on time of possession. Lsu can only make stops when the other team is in the red zone. I just don't see this as a good defensive strategy for competing for sec championships.

Its nice to stop them but giving the offense less plays and leaving the defense out there longer means less points for lsu. Best example of this was the florida game this year. Lsu barely had the ball the whole game.

well if our offense could run more than 3 plays without having to punt then maybe the defense wouldnt be so tired come the 3rd and 4th quarters

understandable, but if a defense really needs to get off the field quickly, the coord must make calls to expeidite the process...Who said both offenses cant go 3 and out all day?...Fact is Chavis Doesnt bring pressure and he will be fired with Miles and Crowton in 1-2 years...he should have gone to GA..
