The extension is for recruiting purposes. The raise is because the administration feels he deserves it. You may not feel that way but they do and they are the ones that make the decisions. Sorry. The buyout is reasonable. 10 million after 2019 which he i not going to get fired no matter what happens. It goes down 250k a month after March 2020. Meaning by the time end of 2020 season you are looking at only 7.5ish million. After 2021 it goes to 4 million. That’s all reasonable this day and age in college football.

To answer the OP’s question. No there probably aren’t any other schools coming after O. That is why he is getting paid middle of the pack sec money and his buyout is one of the lowest in the league.

I like the guy and wish him the best, and I could see giving him a pay raise given the team's success, but why guarantee his paycheck for years to come no matter how well he performs next year or the year after that?

To me it seems like an unnecessary financial liability to have guaranteed money on the books like that unless you're worried he will leave. See: what happened with the previous coach's contract extension. Then again, I have no idea what it's like to be LSU and to have a bunch of other peoples' money to spend.

You don’t have to like it. I don’t even think I agree with it but that’s why O’s agent fought for it and why every administration in college football keeps their coaches on at least 4 year contracts. Tell me a coach in college that has less years than 4 remaining on their contract. going into next year.

No recruit gets excited about attending a school with an uncertain head coaching position.

So LSU didn't get very good recruits in the year Les Miles was hung out to dry and a ton of uncertainty swirled around the HC position? Basically Miles was a dead man walking beginning the end of the 2015 year and it wasn't announced that CEO would be more than interim HC until 2017.

Coach Orgeron deserves a raise. 25-9 record at LSU. Make it incentive based to a degree.

If by "incentive based", you mean guaranteed for the next 5 seasons no matter what.. then sure.
