When did the initial/number thing start? Ex:TM7

When and why did people start referring to players as initials and numbers? I don't recall a whole lot of it before Patrick Peterson (PP7). I guess I sort of understand not wanting to type out the whole name but I heard the host on the Scott Van Pelt show yesterday call Robert Griffin III "RG3". That caught me off guard a little and got me to wondering when all this started. I am pretty sure it all started on message boards such as this, though.

Who knows, but it is annoying.

I believe it started with CP3 or he made it "cool" and popular

RG3 is #10 though
And ODB33 is somehow Odell Beckham Jr.

Because they don't know how to spell his name

I think so. At first, posters just put initials. But that led to confusion because sometime 2 players had the same initials.
Josh Jasper and Jordan Jefferson, for example.
So, saying "JJ played well" was unclear.
Thus, "JJ09 played well" made it more clear.

but then you can't have catchy phrases like "CP3 for MVP"

It started with the Legendary Quarterback Warren Moon. Everybody knows this.
WM1 was what it was about back in the day.
Because everyone knows saying "Double You Em One" is easier to say than "The Legendary Quarterback Warren Moon".

Pretty sure twitter had a lot to do with it. I think Mathieu's twitter handle is like TM7 Era or something

When they got too damn lazy to type the name.

I hate this more than anything. Why in the hell has the second letter of his first name become its own initial?
