It was probably some time in the late 90's at the earliest and it is completely asnine.

It was WAY before the late '90's. I remember "geaux" from the mid-70's.

Firt I remember it was the day Bo Rein came as new head coach-- 1980-- sign on fraternity house said "Geaux Beaux."

In 1978 they would put "Geaux Tigres" on the scoreboards.

Had an old man tell me that there was a guy that played years ago with the last name of Geaux, and it has stuck

Gotta throw the BS flag on that one!
To answer the original question, I remember having to explain what it meant to an airhead date I took to a game in 78 or 79. Don't really remember it from the 60's or early 70's though

I graduated in 77 and don't remember "geaux"being in common usage.

One of the many uniquenesses of LSU. I personally like it, and so do a lot of others it seems.
What's the down side? None that I can see.
