because some of the old timers are still holding onto the idea that new year's day bowls mean something, when they've been irrelevant for decades plus. and also marketing dollars working to try to make sure that you tune into your favorite team playing a meaningless exhibition game so that they can sell ad space on New Year's Day when a lot of people are sitting at home for a holiday.

Old Timer, here.

After reading your post, it got me thinking about what, indeed, is meaningful about bowl games? Which, in turn led me to what, what is meaningful in college football?

I get the same answer, not a damn thing. People who look for meaning in ball games need to check themselves.

Kids today are obsessed with just being national champions, they don't even care about the regular season, much less any individual games outside of the NCG. Personally, I like watching LSU play football. I like the individual games, and the matchups on the field. I like the tactical moves from the coaches, and how each team is adjusting to the other. I'm not one of the ones thinking about January in September, wishing the season was over so I could see my team win a NC. I like to see the Tigers win, any time, against anyone. I don't care about 'implications'. Because the game is meaningless, there are no real implications. There's just football between two teams.

So if there is any 'meaning' to bowl games, it's to allow me one last time to watch LSU play football before a long off-season.

BTW, wtf is up with all this "narrative" shite all of a sudden? Is everyone suddenly an English major or something? Do they think it makes them look smarter? It just makes them look like English majors to me. But seriously, in the last 4 or 5 years, I've been seeing that word EVERYWHERE.

It's the least meaningful game on our schedule. That's not debatable.

Now that's just plain stupid. So, you would be OK with Greedy (and others) deciding to sit out of nonconference games during the season?

I agree w/ you, but the use of the word "narrative" I think is appropriate in this discussion. Here's why. A popular, and very good LSU player, Greedy Williams, decided to declare for the NFL draft, and to sit out the bowl game. Some people feel the need to dump criticism on him, while others feel the need to defend him.

The people who feel the need to defend him have (in my view) created this "narrative" (a story told with a certain spin, with an agenda) that his decision is not selfish, not harmful to his teammates, his brothers, because, well, the bowl game is "meaningless."

I've followed football since the late 1960s. Bowl games have NEVER been "meaningless." I have no idea where that idea came from. It's pure bullshite.

At the same time, Greedy can do what he wants ... as a fan I'd sure like it if he played in the game, because it gives LSU a better chance to win, BUT, I understand his reasons for making the decision, and it's not my place to criticize him, and even if I or any other fan DID criticize him, who really gives a shite?

What does winning a bowl mean though?

Does this bowl affect LSU FB teams chances at a NC? No.
Does this bowl affect which players LSU will/won't get on NSD? No.
Does this bowl affect which LSU players will stay/leave early for the draft? No.
Does this bowl affect LSU coaching hires/fires in any way? No.

There's your answer. All bowls other than the playoffs do not matter other than some very minor implications. This is an exhibition and nothing more.

Teams that "fight like hell" to get bowl eligible are teams with standards much lower than ours who know they'll never fight for a NC.

People melting over bowl losses and the bowl not meaning anything can be two separate things. Fans irrationally care about things that don't matter.

Huh? How did you get that from my post. I said the bowl game is the least meaningful - meaning every other game is more important.

If bowls are meaningless then why don't teams stop playing games after a second loss?

Truth be told, none of it matters.

For one, I never said greedy had bad character. Maybe I should have stated "mentality" instead. He wasn't playing hard from the Bama game on. Devin hasn't shown any signs of "saving himself" for the pros, he's competing and I admire/respect that in a person.
