What is the proper way to defend the infamous Bama "dump pass" to Richardson?

I've watched a significant amount of Alabama football this year, as I'm sure many of our fans have. The "dump pass/check down" (perhaps there is a more appropriate technical term) to Richardson appears to be a staple of their offense.

It typically occurs as follows: Richardson lines up in the backfield as an extra blocker, either to pick up blitzers or chip defensive linemen; the ball is snapped and the Bama WR's run their routes, clearing space and creating a natural void between the LOS and the now retreating defenders (linebackers and DB's) who are reacting to the routes; the Bama oline holds off the oncoming rushers; Richardson leaks out just beyond the oline; McCarron looks downfield briefly and then (either because the play is designed this way or the downfield routes are covered, I don't know which) flips the ball over the line to Richardson, who is uncovered; Richardson turns and finds himself with five or six yards of space; Richardson runs and by the time the DB's and LB's have closed, he has recorded a significant gain.

Every time I see Bama churn yards on this play, I have the eerie feeling that I am playing EA NCAA 12 online against the world's biggest cheeser. But it's effective, and you can't fault a team for being effective.

What is the right way to defend the dump pass/check down? Do you send an extra rusher every time Richardson is in the backfield, either to occupy him as a blocker or to sack the QB before he can dump it off? Do you spy Richardson? Play zone so that the LB's are always near the LOS?

Seriously, how do you stop it? Is there an orthodox, effective way to defend it?

safety and/or LB spy. I'de put Hatcher/Loston/ Taylor/Baker on him depending on the formation as they are 4 capable tacklers who would match up well against TR's size. Just my opinion.

You put a spy on his arse, preferably a sure tackler (LB or SE type)

LB discipline first of all. Safety support would be the 2nd line of defense on that play... Brandon Taylor is excellent in that role.

If we tackle well, our D will handle Bama's O.

If you noticed, we got burned by a few qb's this year with the dumpoff pass. Halfway through both games, TM7 was spying the RB every time he came out of the backfield and the play instantly stopped working. I dont give a damn how much bigger TR is than TM, if he cant catch the ball, there is no need to tackle him.

I would assume LSU will play mostly man anyways and then you would think one guy would spy him.

Will readily admit I'm not a coach or defensive guru. That said, it seems you've got to have some one on Richardson - LB discipline, or bring TM7 up like an earlier poster mentioned.....

Its relatively simple. You can actually just run a blitzer directly at Richardson & destroy him and/or require him to occupy a blocker. This completely negates his ability to run the route.

If he stays at home at first, then simply run the spy directly at him and force him to engage. AJ can't dump it off to a guy whose pass-blocking.

its the same thing as Cam Newton taking off when all the guys are covered. Only TR is not as big. Someone has to cover him, man to man, all the time. Hatcher. Lofton. Reid. someone who HITS.

I would want Hatcher nowhere near Richardson. He's one of the worst tacklers on the team and takes poor angles.

If anyone were to be the 'spy' I would say Reid or Taylor, possibly Mathieu or even one of the LBs like Jones.

Mingo can run him down. Line him up on his side and let him peel off should he see Richardson slip out
