What is the logic of "common opponents"?

Why do SEC teams keep the same team from the other side of the bracket every year and interchange the other ones every few years?
Is there some benefit to this?

Alabama and Tennessee as well as Auburn and Georgia insisted on maintaining their annual rivalry when the SEC grew from 10 to 12 teams. Otherwise the SEC would have gone to a format similar to what the Big XII has now.

Ratings.
I never thought of that.

To keep rivalries in opposite divisions that already existed in place. Such as ALA/UT, AUB/UGA, etc.
If you rotated both opposite division foes, then those rival games wouldn't be played every year.
So, the SEC when it expanded, kept the rival games, and assigned everyone else a permanent opponent (we got UF) in the opposite division and rotated the other.

The world will explode if Bama/UT and Auburn/UGA don't play every year.

Are you getting tired of playing UF?

Ole Miss insisted that they did not want to lose their annual "rivalry" game with Vandy...Thus the SEC decided to oblige them, and gave them Vandy every year to play, LSU to play Florida, Miss St vs Kentucky etc etc

The rivalries that existed draw big audiences. And it's created new ones, (i.e. ours) that are big games annually.

When we have beat them recently (2005 (when urban cried) and 2007 (when Tebow cried)), it has been so satisfying that it feels worth it, but the last couple years it feels that much worse to lose to them.
Here's to hoping for more of them sweet Gator tears from someone next year

It definitely benefits the SEC West teams who are not LSU and do not have to face Florida every year.

Florida is a finesse team, Bama is a physical team. LSU is somewhere in between. You have to out physical Alabama this year. Utah used the other approach last year and won, but this years Bama is not last years Bama.
LSU kept the score close, but the play on the field was more lopsided. Bama missed some opportunities due to poor QB play. Improved line play will increase LSU's chances in the future. UF was whipped on the LOS, both sides.
