What is the best way to make a QB transition?

Miles gets a lot of grief for not playing Brandon Harris... but IMO he played it perfectly.

-You got a True So. who played as a True Fr. last year after Mett went down, and all he did was exactly what you asked him to do en route to a 3-0 record over ranked Iowa, ranked Wisconsin, and cupcake Sam Houston.

-And then you got the No.2 dual threat True Fr. in Brandon Harris, an EE who George Whitfield was raving about in the offseason, coming in to challenge.

--Unless Jennings is playing JJ bad, which he isn't and hasn't, I don't see how you pull the plug on him before the 3 TO 1st quarter against NMST. I think it was apparent to everyone that Harris, at some point in the next 3 years, would overtake Jennings as the starter once Jennings combination of ability/experience was no longer superior to Harris's.

--Harris, on the other hand, gets to ease into his newfound role as the LSU starting QB. Rather than throwing him into the fire against Wisconsin and MSST, he was able to progress and develop at a controlled pace, into what looks to be the next GREAT LSU QB in the lines of Mett and JR.

I don't know that it should have been done any differently, but I'm sure someone will tell me a better way.

Hey Jennings, hit the bricks. Harris, grab your helmet and get your arse in there.

Exactly, I've been saying this at work the last few weeks but no one wanted to hear it.

Harris sure as hell wasn't starting if they were undefeated.

i'm just glad miles and staff don't listen to us fans. hell, we'd have different players in every position in every game.

I just wish Miles had gone to Harris a bit sooner in the Miss State game - LSU might have pulled that one out.

So you think needlessly losing to Miss State because their was not a thorough vetting of both QBs on the field "is playing it perfectly"? Really.

Harris chose LSU over Auburn and Ohio State because he could start day one as part of a top ranked class he helped recruit.

You are not asking a question you are giving your rationalization for how and why Harris was not given equal evaluation time and kept off the field while we lost to unranked MSST. If not for Harris entering that game and moving mountains in minutes, the staff may still not know what he can do. Miles said if he could have given him 30 more seconds he would have won the game. What about half the game?

I think that for a football team to be successful, there needed to be someone they could look to as THE GUY at the quarterback position.

Chris Leak was THE GUY, Tebow was the incumbent
Tyler Russell was THE GUY, Prescott was the incumbent
Matt Flynn was THE GUY, Perrilloux was the incumbent

And I think that Brandon Harris prior to the season was not nearly the same caliber of player he is now. The "thorough vetting of both QBs on the field" is what we've been witnessing for the last four games, and if we had given Harris an even split of the snaps from the get-go, we would have "needlessly" lost to Wisconsin.

Maybe he came in with that expectation and maybe he didn't. And even if he did, guess what? He had the opportunity to COMPETE for the starting job from day one and he wasn't ready at the time. And guess what else? He's had four weeks of practice and four weeks of games and is now LSU's starting QB as a true freshman.

Yes I am.

See? Question.

quote:

Harris was not given equal evaluation time

Because evaluations only happen on Game Day...

Yeah, what if.

Personally, I would have inserted Harris in the second quarter of the Miss St game to see what happens. Not to bench Jennings necessarily.
I would have had Harris start the last game at home. Best time to get the first start out of the way is a home rent a win.
Forget about recruiting stuff. The reason to change is that the team performs better with Harris. This is not the first time a team performed better with one quarterback compared to another.

we had to lose a game and turn the ball over 4 times in the next game before putting in the right qb

I realize this is not exactly addressing the main thread, but I had been wanting to post this type of thing for a few weeks, so I'll do it now.

I guess the 70's and 80's way of thinking by LSU will never return. Back then, sure there was usually a starter, but LSU made great use of the 2 QB system--players like Mickey Guidry and Paul Lyons would get playing time and the likes of Bert Jones and Tommy Hodson would sit out a series and observe--it seemed to be helpful. I thought LSU had some success with this approach.

Now, the mindset of virtually all coaches is let's find a clear #1, give him 95% of the snaps in practice, and don't change, or it might disrupt the team's fragile chemistry.

However, I do think Harris deserves to start!
