What is the allure of single-digit numbers?

Obviously, players love them, especially the playmakers and speedsters. Hell, when I created players on NCAA I went for that as well. When and why did this become a thing? It’s unfashionable for a star wideout to wear a number in the 80’s these days, and a corner or RB wearing a number in the 20’s or 30’s is not preferred to the single digit. How come?

Maybe because there are only nine (or 10 if you count "0") of them and ninety double digits? I like single digits for skilled players but to each their own.

maybe said players can't count beyond that? Or they feel it has a slimming look similar to wearing black
