I just finished looking over The Perfect Season by Bud Johnson.

It was pretty cool.

+1 on Confederacy of Dunces

Bayou Farewell by Mike Tidwell gives a good look into our wetlands destruction.

And you can't go wrong with All the King's Men.

Not a football or sports book, but "Rising Tide" is a terrific book about the great Mississippi River flood of 1927. It'll give you a new perspective about LA.

not something you are looking for at all besides it being a LA book

"No Spark of Malice"

it has nothing to do with LSU sports, but the title does say Louisiana/LSU books, and it's both (published by LSU publishing)

about murder and acadians and french guys that are lynched

I had a poor choice of words previously

I'd second this recommendation big time. Forget about the movie. The book is a great read and touches upon a lot of Louisiana history (Pulitzer prize winner no less, as was "A Confederacy of Dunces").

Huey Long's biography is an amazing read as well if you want more fact than dressed up fiction, and it cover's Huey's great love for LSU and LSU football, though he never attended LSU (Huey went to Tulane law school and somehow talked his way into taking the bar exam after only a year).

it never rains in tiger stadium is a great read.

It basically sums up life without football and teammates after being defined by football playing from peewee to bigtime college football.

in a sense it explains how retired players can lose their identities, and the tragedy of a david woodley... a little depressing but a strong book.

Don't waste your Amazon bucks on LSU Vault. You can get it for about $25 at Wal-Mart.

Unfortunately, I'm in Texas so any local Wal-Mart probably won't have it in stock.

I noticed last night that there is a book called" He Touched Them All" about Wally Pontiff Jr. Might be worth a read.
