rumsfeld, you didn't go to LSU?

I had a cup of coffee there but, alas, I did not graduate from LSU.

I keep holding out for them to start some kind of online degree program. Hell, I might just get a second degree, or MBA, or whatever else I can think of...

LSU's MBA is a great degree for dirt cheap. Also, internal audit is top in the country.

If I would have graduated via the business college, I would donate money. And now that I am thinking about, I would like to donate to the Hill Memorial Library. My family donated a lot of stuff there, and when I went to check the family stuff out I found all kinds of cool stuff that they keep in their archives. The Louisiana history in that library is amazing and definitely worth the time.

Yeah, but until they offer it 100% online, it does me no good.

I'm more curious about the state paying for stadium expansions.

one of the many reasons TAF was founded was because it cut out all of the red tape that is required for state funded contracts to build athletic facilities

state funding has to go through a litany of legislature before you even get to bidding.

When you get to bidding as a state entity you have to let certain groups have a better shot at bids even if they're not the cheapest or the best for the job.

then once the bid is accepted, you have even more red tape to get through in order to actually get the project started.

TAF has allowed us to privatize these improvements and these improvements have moved along much quicker and more efficiently than if they were in the hands of the government

Back in the day, Huey Long expanded Tiger Stadium by building dorms in the stadium.

Those were federal funds, not state. No way they state will or should pay for stadium expansion.

Well put, and thanks for posting. I have abandoned my strong private sector principles to use football to fund my alma matter. The part about hiring "certain groups" is certainly true and is the same in Shreveport. A certain amount of contracts have to go to a "certain group" regardless of their merits. It is called "fair share." I think we all know who this "certain group" is.

I did not know that. Regardless, my misunderstanding of that funding is what lead me to my original post.

Keep in mind, that the revenue from the stadium expansion would replace, or supplement the current state funding for the University (at least as much as it could).

man I know some people who did a joint JD/MBA but I have ZERO background in business besides anything I may have learned in law school. Dunno if it'd be worth it. Maybe should have considered it when I started

I wish I had done the JD/MBA. I'm about to go get my LL.M. in Tax. An MBA would have been helpful for that, my background is political science/history.

This seems like an awful idea on many fronts. First, there are so many needs in the state for which it is very difficult to raise money. Even in a down economy, there is a huge appetite for spending on LSU athletics. Why crowd out that market by handing it over to the state? I'd rather the state's limited resources spent on things that it's hard to sell tickets to (e.g., public education, roads, etc.). Second, giving the profit to the state is a terrible idea as well. LSU has an athletic department whose job it is to make money through athletics. They are incentivized to do that because they can use the profits to expand the empire (and on occasion to fund academics). If the state were to take any profits generated by football, it would eliminate those incentives and most likely lead to inefficiencies.

The profits would go to the University. Although that it is state institution, it would not go back to the legislature.

I'm a nerd and love that stuff. Although, I'm a little nervous about taking the LA bar since I elected to take a bunch of tax classes instead of Family Law, persons, etc. I really only have interest in business law, I hate criminal, family, or procedure stuff.

That is a little less bad than I had originally understood, but I still think that it would kill some of the incentives for the atheletic department to be profitable. And the other point still stands.

Good luck. The bar exam is an exercise in extreme cramming; I'm not sure that your law school course schedule makes much difference.

All the major promoters avoid Baton Rouge due to the fact that they can go to Lafayette or New Orleans, or even the Gulf Coast, and not have "surcharges" and taxes piled on so high that its more of a hassle than anything. Every Good ole boy in BR has jumped in to get a cut, and killed that goose before it could lay any more golden eggs.

Check out the old yearbooks from the 70s. All sorts of amazing shows used to come to campus. It's a shame that they don't anymore

I donated $100 to build the new band hall.

And a bunch more to TAF.

The State should not fit the bill.
