Devin White- Very well may end up being the greatest LSU LB ever. Right now he’s top of 10, easy. Subbed in and made huge plays against A&M, Bama and Louisville.

& Key as an actual LB

What was his position? He was listed as a Buck LB and played from a standing position.

Really good post man. I’m not sure why I’m receiving so much backlash for saying that ‘16 was great. It was just meant to start a discussion.

Exactly. White wasnt on the field enough

Devin logged plying time in 8 games. How does that not count?

Not him playing LB but deserves to be posted again

And while individual stats are unavailable, the 1969 unit was insane. Mike Anderson was All-SEC, George Bevan was All-American, and Bill Thomason was a two-year starter. That defense allowed under 10 PPG and teams rushed for... wait for it... 1.1 yards a carry. ONE POINT ONE. I know football was a different game back then, but Jesus.

They also shut down Pat Sullivan and their only loss of the year was giving up 26 points to Ole Miss, a team that was hanging 60 on teams back when they didn't happen.

He was a big contributor when Beckwith went down against Texas A&M and Bowl game against Louisville. He counts.

I literally just posted a link of him on the field against Bama in the 1st quarter making a huge tackle and Lester Earl and the other cat want to say that he didn’t really count.

Can you think of a bigger situation to have a player in than in the Bama game? Clearly he was a large contributor. He didn’t see the field early because he was behind Duke and Kendall. Both were top 50 players in college football in 2016.

Even though he played a small amount he always made an impact when he did and how a lot of people on here knew he was gonna be good last year. People just like to argue lol

I think it's mainly because as great as the defenses were under Saban and Miles, LB play was the weakest area and that used to be the team strength. Like I said, LSU had a strong history of All-Americans in the 60s-70s and then again in the 80s. But after Eric Hill and Michael Brooks, LSU hasn't really had the same level of success at LB. They haven't been bad, they just haven't been as great as previous Tiger teams, when the strength of the team was the LB unit.

Since 1987, so the last 40 years, LSU has had just three AA Linebackers, a pretty low number if you think about how awesome our defenses have been. I mean, we had four from 1969-72. They are:

2007 Ali Highsmith
2012 Kevin Minter
2017 Devin White

It's the one position where it's still safe to say that the old timers dominate our Best Ever list (and probably offensive line as well while wide receiver is a legit dogfight).

EDITED TO ADD: Also, if you say a bad word about Michael Brooks, a 40+-year old Tiger fan will show up at your house to punch you in the face. Micheal Brooks is a god.

Just having Brooks in that group puts it in the conversation. Maybe the best 1-2-3 tandem in school history.

ETA: 1-2 tandems - Faulk and James and, to go old school, Anderson and Bevan would be my top choices.

But, 1986 might have multiple 1-2 tandems to compete with any of the other notables. Insanely loaded at that position for that year.

1-2 tandems

Hill-Brooks
Richardson-Melancon
Faulk-James
Anderson-Bevan
Beckwith-Riley

This year: White-Chiasson

A problem with a lot of the recent units is you had one stud surrounded by a lot of good but not great guys. Even Beckwith/Riley is being generous to Riley. Ali Highsmith played with Sheppard when he was a freshman, but he wasn't a real impact player then. Luke Sanders started for that 2007 defense along with Cutrera.

I really think this year's unit has potential to be 1986 good. Two legit stud plus a ton of depth.

No, it Wasn't Al Richardson, Lawrence Williams, Rydell Melancon, come to mind.

Underrated tandem:

Rogers/Stansberry

What they lacked in raw athletic ability, they made up for with quick thinking.

This thread got me to looking up some things.

LSU had 3 LBs taken in the 1989 draft: Eric Hill (Rd 1, Overall pick, 10), Ron Sancho (7/171), and Rudy Harmon (9/251). Yes, the draft changed in the intervening years, but LSU did not have another linebacker drafted into the NFL until ... anyone?

Bradie fricking James in 2003 (4/103). 14 years.

In the 15 years since, we've had 2 cats named Riley drafted as linebackers into the NFL. Let that sink in.

Now the draft isn't everything - the great Michael Brooks (mentioned often among LSU's GOAT linebackers, probably is, Big Al Richardson's gaudy stats notwithstanding and as much as I respect Bradie James) dropped to the 3rd round and injuries ultimately limited what he could do in the NFL. Trev Faulk didn't make the transition either.

But, still to have that long of a stretch for a program that is known for hard-nosed defense and working class, lunch pail players at the position, just seems stark. I mean, Mac averaged about 1 linebacker every other NFL draft, pretty much all the way to the end.

Hill, Sancho and Harmon went in the same draft. What happened between 1989 and 2003? Oh wait- Archer/Hallman/Dinardo happened (mostly Hallman).

He recorded 30 tackles on the year, I never said he didn’t play LB, I said he didn’t play enough

Key was only an LB due to scheme and by title only. He solely rushed the passer.

For instance if Mingo played under Aranda he would have been a labeled a LB too. He was used in the same exact way as Key. But was a DE. You can use him if you want but freshmen Devin White & Arden key are weak arguments
