Not trying to be a glory hog, but I asked for the emoticon. I forgot who actually created it, SECond2none, I think, but thank you to whoever it was.

My family and I have some fond memories of Wally.

The funniest one may be when my daughter, her freind and my niece stalked Wally in Tuscaloosa after the games. He was quite gracious with those silly teenaged girls.

Now my daughter is friends with Nick. She loves him too but doesn't stalk him.

He was my favorite player... ever since the SEC Championship Game in 2000 when he hit that Grand Slam and was named the MVP... he was a Freshman then and since Ryan Theriot was leaving I needed a new favorite... I still remember the day he died like it was yesterday.

Your daughter and her friend weren't the only ones stalking him! I wanted to marry him!

And yes, he would always talk to us silly HS girls and do anything we asked. He'd run off the field from infield practice and come straight back to us and finish the conversation. I have tons of stuff signed by him.

And, true stalker that I was, I went to the funeral....as did many other fans.

I also agree that Nick and/or the whole team should wear # 31 for this game each year. Too bad it was Nick's last one.

i remember when wally first started rocking the goatee, he was interviewed about it on the baton rouge news because he had such a baby face. he said he grew it to prove to his team mates that he could.

I don't remember where I first heard this story it may have been on tigerdroppings a few years back but I will tell it as well as I remember it. I don't know if it was true or not but it was a good story.

There was a guy who walked into a chapel and knelt down to pray. After a while he noticed a younger guy also in the chapel wearing a baseball uniform who was also there praying. So they talk for a little bit and the guy realizes he needs to get going so he tells the younger guy it was nice talking to you and introduces himself and the younger guy introduces himself as Wally. Well, as the guy is walking out of the chapel something is puzzling the older guy and when he turns to look at the younger guy he realizes no one is there.

I guess it was last year that I heard Corey Johnson play a interview he did with Wally before he passed. It was really incredible to hear his voice and his exuberance again

yeah thats pretty much the story. It happened at Jesuit High School in New orleans. where both wally and nick went to school. I heard he was in a jesuit uniform but it could be his jersey also. But i heard the story went like this priest went to pray in the chapel early in the morning and there was a jesuit student praying in there also. both got up and kinda left at the same time. and the student introduced himself as wally pontiff. the priest was from out of town so he didnt know who wally pontiff was. so he returned upstairs to the rectory and told the other priest that one of there students wally pontiff was praying early in the morning and how impressed he was. and all the priest were like well wally pontiff has been dead for a couple of years.

also i heard that a teacher saw him walking down the halls at jesuit one day.

some pretty cool stuff

I didn't hear the interview you mention, but remember a funny quip from one Wally did for Condon. It was around the time Skip was leaving and Smoke was taking over. Condon asked Wally to describe the two. Wally replied that one (cannot remember who) was a stoic figure. Condon, not missing a beat, replies with something to the effect: "For those of us who didn't graduate to Jesuit, please define stoic." Wally just laughed and continued the interview. I just found it funny.

about this...

shouldn't the game be over after the babe's walk-off? home team wins right?

maybe it meant the "home team is on top"...of their game?
