how many are advocating that? This thread itself deals mainly with 2 people, far removed from the normal process of suspension and reinstatement deciding they know what is best.

Sweep under the rug?? Not at all but some perspective would be nice

This is not the point, alcohol, and drugs are small symptoms of a disease, for those who are afflicted with the disease. Example: If you are not an alcoholic, drinking alcohol responsibly can be a very nice experience. For someone with alcoholism, alcohol is a treatment for what I would call a soul sickness, alcohol treats alcoholism until consequences set in. It all depends on why these young men are smoking this stuff, it can be a minor problem, or a symptom of something much more serious

Tommy: Let's think about this for a sec, Ted. Why would somebody put a guarantee on a box? Hmmm, very interesting.
Ted Nelson, Customer: Go on, I'm listening.
Tommy: Here's the way I see it, Ted. Guy puts a fancy guarantee on a box 'cause he wants you to feel all warm and toasty inside.
Ted Nelson, Customer: Yeah, makes a man feel good.
Tommy: 'Course it does. Why shouldn't it? Ya figure you put that little box under your pillow at night, the Guarantee Fairy might come by and leave a quarter, am I right, Ted?
[chuckles until he sees that Ted is not laughing]
Ted Nelson, Customer: [impatiently] What's your point?
Tommy: The point is, how do you know the fairy isn't a crazy glue sniffer? "Building model airplanes" says the little fairy; well, we're not buying it. He sneaks into your house once, that's all it takes. The next thing you know, there's money missing off the dresser, and your daughter's knocked up. I seen it a hundred times.
Ted Nelson, Customer: But why do they put a guarantee on the box?
Tommy: Because they know all they sold ya was a guaranteed piece of shite. That's all it is, isn't it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your customer's sake, for your daughter's sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality product from me.

Why yes, yes it does! And that price is being put under a microscope and being scrutinized by everyone, in particular the media. The players who break the rules have to pay a price as well, and that is being done by the LSU administration. The worst thing LSU could have done was try to sweep this under the rug like many are advocating.
no one is advocating sweeping anything under the rug. I think the punishment fit the crime. Siting out for AU was a big deal, not like is was western Kentucky. Theoretically, we could have lost.

What they want is a reason to dismiss a player with no expectation of reprecussions against them to help reverse the perception of their tainted reputations. Please Joe, Aleave-a.

NOBODY said anything about anyones character. Very simple, they knew the rules, they knew what would happen if caught, they got caught, simple.

while I agree with your statement we have not proof that these young men are addicts- nor has there been a professional assessment to indicate this

Martin and Aleva now need their 15 minutes of fame! According to WAFB they will decide when players return and they want some guarantees that the suspended players will not make the mistake again

A lot of big System members are kind of into LSU football...These two should remember that they're not bigger than the program...

violations though do not all carry the same punishment. Violations of the same law often do not carry the same punishment from person to person and for good reason.

So you're saying these 3 should receive different treatment just because they're athletes on the #1 team in the nation? Or am I misunderstanding what you're getting at.

I get the "we mean business" aspect, but is it not just drawing more attention to the situation? It's more harm than good.

martin should focus on the budgetary challenges LSU is facing and ALeva should be in Trent Johnsons back pocket helping him revive the BB program-

CLM can handle his team

I am referring to a broader sense of justice and fair play.

First time offender vs repeat offender should get different punishments.

The man who breaks into a closed pharamacy to get medicine for his sick wife should be treated different than the guy who breaks into the same pharmacy looking to get high.

Some bright line rule where if you violate Rule A Section 2 then punishment X will apply is not a good idea.

1-800-call-Duke - - Aleva did a great job (sarcasm inserted here) with handling their lacrosse problem.

Too many things have happened in a relatively short period of time.

Aleva and Martin did not create this situation. Do any of you think either wants to be dealing with this type of situation?

I am sure Miles was aware of the importance of the team avoiding this situation. Aleva and Martin could be saying that Les has had the opportunity to control the situation---now we will see what we can do.

I feel 100% certain the three plyers will play in the Bama game. I do, however, think that the culminaton of this situation and the other rules violations have placed the entire football team into a box and all will be under greater scrutiny.

Events that we 'Ranters' may feel as insignificant and petty may well be very important to those in control of administering and monitoring discipline.

"Institutional Control" is a very significant factor in an NCAA investigation and when a program is on probation the necessity to maintain institutional control is an absolute necessity.

All three players are amoung my favorite players and I want them back on the field playing. I hate the hammer fell at such an inopportune time for these players----but I think the powers-to-be
have drawn a line in the sand and said NOW is the time to get our house in order.

These three players could be under constant scrutiny for their remaining tenure at LSU.

This was my very next post. It's on a individual basis like everything else in life. It's no different with the law.

And this is assuming life is fair.
