speaking of using your athletes, when was the last time that LSU even tried to block a punt?

I think in retrospect, Percy has always been the scary one (though Tebow gets the edge near the goal line or on 3rd and short).
Honestly, this year it was Demps and Gainey around the end that seemed to hurt us the most consistently. I don't know what it was about that play, but it seemed impossible for us to have anybody in the 15 yard gap between the DE and LB.

I think Byrd would probably be #2 behind Trindon on this year's roster for us

I've seen Byrd run enough, and I've seen Florida's players run enough that I would confidently say that he would not be in the Top 5 on the Gators roster in the forty yard dash

I did not feel Florida did anything to embarrass us in '06. The only embarrassing thing was how stupid our guys looked dropping the ball all over the field. And even with that, losing by 13 on the road to the National Champions isn't particularly embarrassing. Losing to the National Champions when they give you five turnovers would arguably be at least as embarrassing.

Meyer clearly is an elite coach. But his methods are hardly infallible, and though he was certainly more successful this year his methods have not consistently produced results much superior to Miles'. This year clearly put him in the lead, but it will take time for the level of performance we had this season to be anything other than an anomaly.

Thank you for some clear-headed reason. Miles is a very good head coach (a bit overpaid, but who in the SEC isnt?). Meyer is certainly an offensive genious but results on the field go beyond just Xs and Os. I really believe that without Tebow they will just be a very good team as opposed to an elite. Time and again, he rescues them from bad situations sometimes by pure determination. They will suffer when he's gone.

That being said, I don't think there's anybody who can credibly argue that we have more speed at our skill positions than UF.

I think their defense is more key than their offense, even Tebow.

The funny thing about Meyer is that when he got to Florida the big debate was whether his "gimmick" offense would just work in the SEC, or whether it would dominate the SEC. Two SEC Titles and two National Titles in his first 4 seasons later, some people are quick to claim that it has dominated. But, imo, the truth is much more surprising: it's his defenses that have been more significant to his success in the SEC than his offense.

Think about this: 2007 was the most successful season for his offense since he got to Florida in terms of points and yards (the '08 team scored more points, but had 3 more defensive/special teams TDs; offense actually scored about 40 ppg vs. about 40.4 in '07). And yet, it was Meyer's worst season at Florida. It was also Florida's worst defensive performance under Meyer.

That is without a doubt. While I believe defense is key to Urban's success, no team could lose a Tim Tebow without being worse for it.

If Les Miles ever gets ahold of this thought then LOOK out. I every year when I see so many freakish athletes that LSU has just stand on the sidelines and are never used. Florida has 5 Trindon Holliday's and they use EVERY ONE OF THEM. LSU hardly uses the one we have.

we have similar speed, the offense we run is just slightly different. That may be the reason it is so magnified.

I've thought this too. As much as everyone worships the Wizard, and no doubt he is a great OC, I don't think we do enough to get the ball to our skill guys in space (especially TH, who doesn't seem to be able to run through a crowd at all - whereas Fla's fast guys can). Fla and other teams do a lot of short crossing patterns that seem to get LBs chasing their slot guys or guys out of the back field, then with some decent down field blocking a 5 yard pass becomes a 20 yard gain.

That being said, Meyer is pretty amazing with that crazy double pitch option offense.

I sure hope we use those sorts of plays next year with JJ and/or Shep on either end of it. It was great watching how when OK finally got in position to stop the option to the outside, they did the shuttle pass to the Tight End on the inside for a big gain. That was a very nice wrinkle.

Gotta give props to Fla., they were dominant on both sides of the ball. Their defense really was the difference though IMO as every time OK seemed like it would get back in the game, the defense came up big play after big play. It will be nice to see what our defense can do when guys just fly to the ball and the QB again like we've had in years past and Fla was doing last night.

the triple option shuffle underneath to the tightend was killer. we need to run that with JJ and RD and KW

so in your opinion did meyer use his skill guys more effectively than michigan last year?....yeah meyer is a great coach but hes not some messiah....he misuses players (as said before demps in the NC) while I would like to see more TH and maybe a little more KW, but I think that with the way the rest of the offense was built the past couple of years (the qbs, the other wrs) I think that we played to our strengths....theres more than one way to skin a cat, and I believe our offense last year was the highest scoring in LSU history, so Id say for the most part, we have effectively used our talent over the miles tenure. There may be a player or game, here or there that leaves you scratching your head but overall i think the results have worked

I'm going to guess he was talking about UT, who fumbled x50 on offense, and UGA who underutilized some great players
