Read this when you need a chuckle. It's long and there is so much penis envy contained in it. A whole page devoted to its name history, why they call themselves "UL", and pot shots at LSU along the way. Someone spent a whole lot of time and effort to try to legitimize "UL"

Call us UL damnit...boo hoo

Although Judge Brown was an alumnus of LSU, and an active supporter of that school, he did not recuse himself from the case despite this apparent conflict of interest.

Please just leave the Bulldogs, I mean Cajuns, I mean hot peppers alone. If we just acknowledge that they are "Louisiana" they will suddenly be a great university capable of competing with anyone and everyone (particularly on the football field).

Why can't everyone just understand that it is the damned name that has held them back all these years and not the fact that they are a crappy college? Come one guys, have a heart and give them the name that will set them free forever.

In the 2000 NCAA Basketball Tournament, ESPN & CBS referred to the Cajuns as The University of Louisiana, the long sought after name for the school. However, before their appearance in the 2000 College World Series, at the behest of LSU staff and administrators, ESPN discontinued the name "The University of Louisiana," and began using the longer and clumsier name of "Louisiana-Lafayette." The Cajuns were occasionally called “Lafayette,” which can be confused with the UL College "Leopards" of Easton, PA.

Since some apparently believe in full names, it is interesting to note that ESPN did not reciprocate by calling LSU by its full name, “Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College at Baton Rouge.” LSU baseball coach Turtle Thomas even publicly stated that LSU was the University of Louisiana during the 2000 CWS. As the LSU and University of Louisiana systems are separate distinct entities, this only served to confuse the situation further. Why do they care?

How the hell do they know this? Were they in on some backdoor conversation where Skip paid the commentators to say ULL?

BTW, Louisiana-Lafayette actually flows off of the tongue better IMO.

This is funny. Why is "Louisiana-Lafayette" clumsier to pronounce? It's 8 syllables, where as "The University of Louisiana" is 12. They are trying so hard.

But it is in the state legislature bylaws that they be refered to as The University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Why can't they understand that? They are not better that ULM. Why not shorten your name even more then and just go by the U of Lou? That's unique, and nobody else has it. I can hear the chants now, "U of Lou, U of Lou!!!"

I've got it, why doesn't LSU tell everyone that they play to please don't call us LSU. We want to be known as "The Kings of the Universe". Please put that on the scoreboard, and make sure your radio announcers call us by our chosen name.

This leaves the door open for UL UL to be commonly and popularly known as LOUISIANA, while maintaining the official name.

So now USL wants to be called "louisiana" ? I don't think I have ever heard someone refer to them as just Louisiana. This is a school with an identity crisis.

I don't really care what they want to call themselves but if iI get a vote i'd go with U-La-La (kind of like in the simon and garfunkle song wake up little suzy).

I always chuckle when I see the university of louisiana @ lafayette signs with the lafayette in very small print.

It is kind of shitty though, ULL was allowed the name change in 84 only to have it over turned by the state.ULM never wanted to change its name either. Seems like no one really got what they wanted.

My question is why was the name change in 84 shot down? I dont honestly believe that LSU officials were threatened, but it does seem odd and doesnt make much sense.

ULL is more then a regional college with its population base and courses of study. (also just about 2x larger then the other regional colleges in the state) It probably should be recognized as UL, however, until it is, I have no problem calling it ULL. It's not like its some terrible curse to have the extra L.

Why not just put this on the helmets since they represent the state.

From Wikipedia:
quote:

In 1984, the then-University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL) received permission from Tulane University to adopt the name "The University of Louisiana." USL applied to the then-Board of Trustees for State Colleges and Universities (now The University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors) for permission to change its name to "The University of Louisiana," and on April 27 of that year permission was granted. The Louisiana Board of Regents quickly filed suit with the Board of Trustees, and on May 22, District Judge William H. Brown stripped the university of the name, upon which it reverted to USL. Immediately thereafter, the state legislature removed from all of the boards of higher education their historical powers over names of buildings, colleges and universities, and the legislature reserved that right solely for itself.

I agree. I don't see why Brown wouldn't allow the name change.

Lafayette is a great town. They should be proud to have it in their name, IMO.

I guess LSU, Tulane, Southern, UNO, McNeese, SLU, LA Tech can also wear that cap since they all play Louisiana baseball too.

Well, they don't say "Louisiana" when asked what school they go to, but they've already dropped the last "L" in "ULL". I don't think there is a single piece of clothing that is licensed that has "ULL" on it.

The poor "Lafayette" is hanging on by a thread:

Pretty soon it will be "Louisiana" and then just "La". Before long it'll just be "L".

"Where'd you go to school?"

" I went to L"
