at least these are in your control as opposed to being randomly stabbed walking around the quarter with friends.
Actually, most of them are not. Sodium is essential to survival, and the bodies reaction to it is highly complex and not completely understood. Hunting accidents usually involve people being shot by someone other than themselves, which is beyond their control. I could completely quit drinking, but short of that there is not way to absolutely guarantee any alcohol consumed will not lead to liver damage. The best you can do is take reasonable steps to limit your risk, which is precisely what I do. Just like I take reasonable steps to limit my risk of being stabbed walking around the quarter. It's not an absolute guarantee of safety, but neither is much of anything else.

So you live in the Nashville area, and only vacation in Franklin? Okay, some people would consider that a bit limited and an overreaction to crime concerns. But it's all a personal choice, so whatever works for you

no, i live here and its an example that not everyone who lives near a major city has to sleep with their doors locked.

Obviously you chose entirely subjective language, but apparently you've decided that more than a 6 1/2% increase in violent crime, including increases in assaults and murders (with over a 25% increase in firearm assaults!) is not "rampant unchecked crime", and is something with which you are comfortable

you know nothing of this area but nice stats you found

And, also, maybe why you only vacation in Franklin, TN?

nah, we go to 30a, out west, disneyworld, etc.

none of those places have i ever felt as uncomfortable as when bringing the kids to NOLA.

Okay, I guess there's a comprehension problem on your end. You said you choose to vacation in safer places than New Orleans, and when I asked where you said "Franklin, TN." Kind of a random non sequitur, but whatever.

No one has suggested that they do. But it indisputable that you are significantly increasing the chance that you or your family will be the victims of a crime if you leave your doors unlocked. It does not mean anything to me because I do the same thing in the community where I live. But I don't pretend like it's not a risk, I just accept that it is a risk I am willing to take for the convenience of not bothering to lock my doors all the time.

You leave your doors unlocked at Disneyworld? That's a risk I certainly did not feel comfortable taking.

I'm sure you didn't. But again, whether or not New Orleans is the safest, most comfortable place on the planet is hardly the subject of this discussion. The subject is whether there is anything so exceptional about the problems New Orleans experiences that it should not be considered in the category as normal metropolitan areas in the U.S. There's nothing statistical to suggest that (to my knowledge, it's not actually the worst in any violent crime stats, poverty, unemployment or education).
