even if paying players in the past was widespread (it was, at least for the good players) it was NOWHERE near the level it is today.

And the transfer rules back then didn't allow the annual feeding frenzy we're seeing now, with no one year sit-out required. So it's just the Wild West, with no regulation or guardrails to protect the game.

So it was nowhere close to the same.
