It's about time he got a mention as a being in the race. Doubt he will win THIS YEAR, but finishing in strong contention and maybe being invited to NYC could put him as a front runner next year. He's definately the top defensive player in the nation so far this year and if he keeps this up, should be a shoe-in for the Bednarick Award this year.

Against West Virginia he was all over the field, recording six tackles and an interception.

AND ripping the ball out with the recovery, best player I've ever seen at doing this.

According to 1 of 5 sites. The consensus was he was a 3 star with UL Monroe being his 2nd best offer. The star system is flawed.

As much as I would love it to happen, Just don't see a defensive player getting it anytime soon

I also I agree, but it is great publicity for both Tyrann and LSU.

This is 2 years in a row that LSU has a different defensive player in the Heisman watch. That's pretty remarkable.

He's certainly better than Kellen Moore. I'd move him to #4.

Yeah, I think him as a So. being in the conversation should be a big nod of respect for his performance, outside of that, considering that 3 of the finalists from last years Heisman ballot are still active I think TM7 journey up the ballot is rather daunting(not sayin impossible), but if he keeps it up for another year or so, I think he could come closer to it than PP7.

He was actually only 2-star when LSU offered him, then bumped to a 4-star a week or two later

making big plays is his thing and changing games with turnovers

I think he can maybe at least make a trip for the Heisman. Here's to hoping to continued success!

The Honey Badger! https://www.ology.com/sports/lsus-honey-badger-tyrann-mathieu-takes-what-he-wants

Mathieu should certainly be in Heisman discussion so far. Tough to see him ultimately getting it--when Charles Woodson won it in 97, he got a big boost from taking offensive snaps, and scoring on returns.

But guys in the NFL like Troy Polamalu are raising awareness for game-changing defensive standouts, so maybe college folks will eventually get on board.

He will move up to the No.2 spot just by getting black dredlocks...

IMO its so much more impressive that he has impact on so many games without the ball in his hands.

Anyone can impress when they touch the ball so often on offense.

If he keeps his current pace of tackles and turnovers (which would be a challenge) and also has a few big plays and touchdown in the Alabama game as LSU goes undefeated, he will WIN it!!!

Eric Berry at Tennessee was also a very good DB that was never mentioned in the Heisman talk
