That group played one year together and was not a traditional construction…CJ was virtually the only weapon the year before and was slow to adjust to the additional talent. I wish he had come back for one more year.

A more important question is how did this team with all this talent not win the championship?
Answer: Dale Brown

LSU also didn't matchup with Arkansas very well back then. Arkansas was a powerhouse, and Oliver Miller used to give it to Shaq down in the paint.

Easy. Shaquille was a true freshman and was not yet the player he would become 2 years later. Stanley was a redshirt freshman. This in an era where players stayed for at least 3 years.

LSU was obviously stacked, but Shaq was just a freshman. He was an awesome freshman, but not yet would he would become. CJ being sick and fouling out did LSU in.
You can tell this guy actually watched LSU basketball instead of the Tards wanting to blame Dale Brown.

Record-wise, for sure. The excitement of CJ and Shaq though extended it some. Games like LSU beating #2 Georgetown in 1988 at the Dome in front of the largest crowd ever to witness a regular season basketball game (college or pro), the Loyola Marymount showdown in 89, and LSU beating the eventual national champion UNLV that same year were about as good as games get. That UNLV team was one of the most dominant ever in the tourney. They beat Duke by 30 in the national championship game. LSU managed to beat UNLV in back-to-back seasons.

We did not have a true offense that season. The previous year consisted of Chris Jackson versus the world. That carried over to a great extent. As a result, there were games where we lost rhythm. Also , Maurice and Shaq were fantastic defenders. Chris and Stanley were lazy defenders. Vern was solid on defense. A lot of individual great pieces that didn’t fit well together.

Dale Brown couldn't coach himself out of a wet dream!

Just think the school named the court after him. That is the bigger travesty.

Nah, Dale is most deserving. Made LSU basketball quite relevant during his tenure. He's a great person as well.

that wasn't a good "team"...they didn't play well together on the court.
right but the question still remains. Why? It's probably one of the more talented starting 5s you'll ever find in college basketball.

Because it was Shaq and Stanley's first year playing in an era when most teams had lots of upper class players. As another poster stated, Shaq was tough on defense his freshman year, but often got in foul trouble and his offense real took off as a sophomore and junior.

Shaq said they all wanted to be the man. CJ was clearly the best back then, but the others were all heralded players too who needed to learn how to play as a team. Also, college basketball teams back then were stacked with phenomenal talent.
CJ and Shaq were about as good as it got though for their respective positions (Shaq wasn't quite there yet on offense though his freshman year).
