No, Hanagriff said on the radio that Ridley never had a firm grasp on the ball after it was tossed to him. I call bullshite on that...Ridley had the ball just fine. He also said he hates the play in general, but left that for a different discussion.

risky toss play
It's risky for the center to snap the ball too, but pitching and catching the football is the most basic fundamental in the game. I get that it's less likely to fumble an exchange on a straight handoff than on a pitch, but we're talking less than 1% of the time for both plays. To me, this whole issue is a huge reach just to point more blame at the coaching staff. Bitch about something worth bitching about.

If running a toss is risky then we are just terrible. I've seen more fumbles on botched hand offs than tosses. You rarely see a toss fumbled. It's not risky at all. Now an option pitch is a different story.

Why the hell are we running a toss in the 4th quarter on 3rd?? Not a coach in America with any sense would do that. Even if Crowton called the play, Miles should have enough sense to say "Wait NO! Put the ball in his stomach! Do not toss it! Hand it off. We don't want to take that risk."
more idiotic analysis from the rant

They needed a first down and he had it when he fumbled. I guess Les Miles caused the fumble
too.
too.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I was talking about the OP and not Hanagriff.

No kidding. There are entirely more hand offs than tosses in football so you're going to see more botched hand offs. Ratio of botched hand offs/ successful hand offs as opposed to botched tosses/ successful tosses would tell you that the hand off is by far the safest play call.

What was that kids name that only lost one fumble in four years. I missed him last night.
Sorry, I just had to go there.

Ok...I will take the other side. I think it was a great call to run the toss. You KNOW Carolina had to be expecting a run up the gut. The toss play got Ridley away from the congestion a little and allowed him to get the yards he needed.

Sean Payton once ran a reverse with a pitch in basically the same situation except it was around midfield.
And it was to run out the clock to win a spot in the playoffs.
I am guessing you are talking about the tb game in 2007.

Either way, I pisses me off to see a hand off 5 yards deep when we are trying to pick up 1 yard.

Watch the way the elite runners handle the ball, they hold it high and tight and will put two arms around the ball in traffic. He will get more touches in practice this week and get the coaching needed to drive technique home.
Why didn't Wilson drive home the proper ball carrying technique in the Spring, pre-season Fall practice and after the FIRST fumble?......

You guys are missing the point completely. I immediately said the same thing when I saw it. The risk is much higher than handing a ball off in his stomach. If the toss goes bad, its likely going over his head. That means that is a high risk of someone picking it up for six. The risk is much lower when handing off to a RB...
It was pretty stupid call, regardless of the gain.
When you know a game is in check, you hand the ball off or kneel it. You don't do HB tosses. That is like running a reverse in that play, if the fumble happens, its likely going to be disastrous because the RB isn't going to be able to stop at full speed and fall on the ball...
I don't think the game was won at that point but even so, if LSU had to punt, UNC would get it with less than 30 seconds on the clock. Not exactly drive material there...
Regardless, the call was stupid when you consider the risk. I've seen too many HB tosses go over heads before and DEs make a beeline for the ball taking it for six...

Exactly, when you fumble a handoff on a dive, it's most likely going to end up at the line of scrimmage and stay there regardless of which team picks it up. There are just more things that can go wrong on a pitch than a handoff up the gut. You usually have guards pulling, the running back has to worry about catching the pitch while still having a feel for where the defenders are, etc.

I agree. Regardless of when he fumbled the ball, it is still more risky to toss it rather than hand it off.
sure it is.

Sure is. You're a dumbass if you think the odds are the same. At least the ball is falling at his feet, with his QB behind him and probably to his O-line. A HB toss goes directly behind everyone, so if it goes past the RB, it is a direct scramble to the ball with the defense with the advantage. The O-line sure as hell isn't falling on it with their backs turned. As opposed to a hand off in the gut falling at his feet of the O-lineman.

Every wonder why it's so hard for a spread option QB to take a snap from under center? Hmmmm?

Another issue is that when the back is receiving the pitch, he's in a very vulnerable position in the event the defense blitzes an outside backer, a safety or a corner.

What are you getting at? I played center in high school, and it's much easier to snap the ball with the qb under center as opposed to running out of shotgun. UNC actually got a safety because their center snapped the ball out of the back of the end zone. It usually ends really badly when a center messes up the shotgun snap. Much worse than if the qb is under center.

I think you missed the point a long time ago.
It's fine, don't worry about it. Really.
