Someone please tell me why in order to be a "great fan" I have to act like a jackass to the opposing team and their fans?
Who is saying this? The people in this thread arguing against the victory lap have repeatedly said that giving a standing ovation is perfectly fine. There is a middle ground between throwing piss baloons at the opposing team and fans, and giving them a handjob after they beat us. Most reasonable people understand this.
Exiting the stadium, walking to your car, and leaving, in lieu of giving the opposing team a victory lap is not a classless way of being a fan. And giving the opposing team a victory lap is not an extra classy way of being a fan, it's either belittling or self-aggrandizing, depending on the situation, sometimes it's both.

Obviously enough LSU fans felt it was fitting under the circumstances. Everyone doesn't have to agree, but is it necessary bash the fans who did or the Stony Brook players over it?

Yes. People who front need to be called out.
ETA: Why is this still on the first page?

The fans, yes. Let's analogize this situation.
You're taking your SO out to dinner, and decide on a 5 star steak house. You open the car door for her, pull out her seat at the dinner table, order for her, and pay for the meal. You act as a true gentleman.
A few days later, you guys go out again. But this time, you go out to eat at Applebees. Would you suddenly not act as a gentleman, and abandon your manners entirely? Simply because of the restaurant at which you decided to eat? Are those qualities not innate?
For the baseball fans that displayed "true sportsmanship and respect", we should ask - if we're upset this season at home by a non-conference opponent in football, will their post game actions comport with their actions after game 3 in the Stony Brooks series? Are they true "sports", such that those qualities within them transcend mere context, or are they puppets that subconsciously feign "sportsmanship" and "respect" because they've been culturally conditioned to do so in specific settings?

You're talking about two completely different animals here (baseball and football).

Hence my analogy. A five star restaurant and Chilis are two completely different types of restaurants, just as football is completely different from baseball with respect to atmosphere and tone.
But if you act as a "gentleman" at the 5 star restaurant, would you suddenly abandon your manners upon eating at Chilis, simply because it's "different"?

I see what you're getting at.
Ok, serious question, what exactly are you trying to prove? I really am asking.

Well, I'm not trying to "prove" anything. Proofs are for mathematics and philosophy.
I'm attempting to point out the illogicality of the behavioral dissonance of fans who applaud a foe in baseball, but trash an opponent in football (in the specific context of a loss).
Especially after they promote themselves as "sports" and "classy".

Good luck with that.
You post strange things. No disrespect intended.

What else have I posted that you consider strange?
Not arguing with you. Just curious.

Nope. Not going there.
I'm sure you know.
Again, no disrespect intended.

PB I'm trying to comprehend your point...
Are you commenting on the apparent hypocrisy of (some) LSU fans congratulating a baseball opponent on their CWS-clinching victory; as opposed to the vitriol which is spewed by (some) LSU fans to a football opponent after a loss in Tiger Stadium? (which by the way has not happened since October of 2009 - and which ALSO, by the way, is usually epic silence, depression, and dejected walks back to your vehicles.)
Rather, are you commenting that (some) LSU fans were actually being almost condescending and self-aggrandizing on their congratulatory exhibition Sunday night - ostensibly saying ("Yes, we are the powerhouse, but we let you, the little guy, win one - and we will be rooting for you - the Cinderella underdog - in your first trip to Omaha.")?
