No wonder Lane was so upset about our portal class. Even with the Ole Miss boosters going all in, he still couldn’t get the number 1 portal class.

Yeah, Lane was definitely not happy in that presser that LSU had gotten aggressive in transfer portal.

I followed recruiting pretty hard last winter.
We absolutely out-recruited Ole Miss in the portal.
They wanted Pyburn, Payton, Delane, Moore, Brown and others. They would have had another loaded team if BK didn’t get aggressive in portal

I personally think BK is not calling all the shots anymore.
Just like how he cleaned house when he first showed up. I think The powers that be stepped in and somewhat forced his hand to bring some of those guys back (Raymond, Baker).
I think this was similar. They told Kelly they'd spend whatever they had to but he better grab some players that he thinks can get the job done, because they don't want to hear about talent deficiency from him anymore.

Wrong. Either you spend on both and have both working well, or you risk being the next FSU 2024 or LSU Defense in 2023.
Dabo has sufficiently proved that you can’t live fully off HS recruiting anymore. Even his recent dabbling in the portal isn’t enough. But we’ve also seen enough examples of the chaos you sign up for if you are too reliant on the portal every year.
As in most things, balance is the key. Recruit well, RETAIN, and supplement based on needs and impact players available with the portal.

Right. But we have people here that dont understand why we have spent a lot of money on a mega staff.
All of these task (and the time it consumes) are way to much for a head coach and traditional coaching staff.
LSU (and others) got caught flat footed with NIL. I like what we have done in the last 18 months or so to not only catch up but be a leader in the way ahead. And it will payoff.

Bud Elliot needs to just admit defeat and eat some shite on Cover 3. He spent the entire offseason fading all of the teams that went heavy in this portal, including LSU, saying this wasn’t a very talented class. So far he’s getting his arse handed to him on all fronts.

I agree. It seems like we started off focused completely on “legit NIL” when O was still here and then Kelly stuck with that for his first 2 seasons. We can definitely see how much the philosophy has changed over the last year and a half. It’s almost a complete 180.
One thing I credit this staff with, even going back before the staff was beefed up, is retention. We have lost plenty of players, but few who we really wanted to keep at truly missed. There have been a few like Heard and Atkins, but we’ve had far fewer impact guys leave than most.

That’s what I’ve been saying, high school recruiting is effectively irrelevant now. Even if they actually sign with your, team, they are only guaranteed to have them 4 months as a freshman, then it’s open season for other teams to raid your team.
