The Russell v. Flynn issue.

I can't fathom an argument that keeps Russell out of the top 5.

I'm talking about all day yesterday and today. I can't post at work so I just read your poli board arguments

Good to see a familiar face...I don't post here often.

I usually don't either, but the last 2 days or so I have and this place is more intolerant of differing opinions than the Poliboard.

And I agree with your assessment so far on this thread.

AM and I had a disagreement about Flynn and Russell (who would I rather have), but I guess we're still on speaking terms.

I think I got called a racist, idiot, moron, f-ing moron, etc. during the debate.

if you don't think Russell is in the Top 5 all time at LSU, some, or all, of those would fit nicely...

I appreciate what Flynn and Mauck did at LSU. They were the QB's when LSU won its last 2 National Championship teams.

But in talk of top 5, they do not have the same accomplishments as the mentioned QB's.

I will probably be considered a traitor but they remind me of Trent Dilfer and Baltimore Ravens. You would not consider him the best QB of all time. He was on right team at right time. The team did not win because of him and he did not have to win many games by himself.

But alas... this is going to turn from Top 5 LSU to another Flynn/Mauck vs JR debate.

In my opinion, Hodson is not top 5.

4 time all SEC QB
4 years of 2k+ passing yards
First QB in SEC to pass over 8k yards and had 69 touchdowns but not Top 5 LSU??

And when he graduated he had more wins than any college QB before him.

I can see putting Flynn on the list, but not Mauck. The 2003 offense sometimes scared me. the 2007 offense was maybe the best in recent LSU history.

I would. As a freshman Hodson whupped a very good A&M team to begin his great LSU run at QB and he was a tough SOB to boot.

I was at that game; Hodson split time with Guidry, but it was obvious who was the read deal. I don't think I'll ever forget how I went to a party after the game and immediately called my mother to tell her how the game went (she was too nervous to do more than check the score on the radio every once in a while). The first thing out of my mouth when she answered the phone with, "How'd they look?" was, "Mom, we got ourselves a fricking quarterback."

One thing about Hodson, when he stepped onto the field, you could just feel the confidence. He was a leader, even as a freshman. JR had more physical talent, but he didn't have that same kind of feeling for the game...not until he was a senior, and even then, I thought he was still a work in progress. In JR's defense, the game changed a lot between the 80s and when he played, on both sides of the ball (a lot of the time, all Hodson had to do was read the blitz and throw to Wendell Davis). But Flynn, in his one year...he reminded me in many ways of Hodson; not physically, but he had that same confident way of managing the game.

So I'd list:

Tittle
Jones
Hodson
JR
