I have no idea who is better, but I do think there is a tendency to automatically discount players from previous generations.
To be fair, there is also a tendency for some older and/or more nostalgic fans to exaggerate in their own minds the exploits of their heroes of bygone days. I myself felt like Hokie Gajan was the greatest football player ever for several years, just because he was the first cool LSU football name I learned.

Casanova is one of the all time greats, but if you look back realistically on some of the other "all time greats" people bring up they turn out to be simply among the greats of their time (which isn't a bad thing).

I know Casanova 1) led LSU in RUSHING as a freshman
No, he didn't. He didn't play as a freshman (they weren't eligible til '72) and he never led LSU in rushing. This is precisely the kind of distortion that I was talking about earlier.

Tommy Casanova is legitimately one the greatest college football players ever. But some other guys who are not quite at his level get this same treatment and are remembered better than they actually were. Which is much better than the reverse tendency of remembering less popular players as worse than they were (JaMarcus Russell, for example), but is still a bit of distortion.
