My buddy was a walk on at Ole Miss under Coach O. He's got nothing but good things to say, except he said some of the things O said about LSU those years would make me blush.
Nothing wrong with that though.

Agreed, it was his job. Coaches are mercenaries. Totally understood.

This speaks volumes about the man Coach O is off the field. What a stellar hire he is!

I think most people agree he's one of the best DLine coaches in America. I'd put him and Karl Dunbar in the same category

Its been some years years since I read Feldman's Meat Market but I seem to remember Coach O coming across as a bit of a buffoon. But regardless of how good of a coach or bad of a coach he was once upon a time in Oxford, he more recently did one hell of a job as interim HC at USCw.
People mature. People hone their craft. No one ran a tighter ship than Pete Carroll and he obviously thought highly of O.

The USC Trojan's mistake in not promoting Orgeron to H.C., is LSU's good fortune.

When was the last time The Rant was this excited about a position coach? Probably never, but for what he brings to the recruiting table, it's exciting.

"There is a spontaneous feeling among the USC Trojan players to explain their loyalty to Orgeron, even though he was basically the defensive line coach the past three seasons."
“I think Coach O is very unique,” Kessler said. “There’s no one else in the country that is like him that I’ve seen. We absolutely love him. He has that look in his eyes that you can tell when he talks to you that he really does care. LINK

Encouraging. My SC hatred abates somewhat. They're still rich kid punk asses though.

Damn they really loved him.
From the articles I read at the time Coach O took over as interim HC at USC it was very clear that the players had a lot of trust in him, and that showed on the field.

There is an interview done at the time he was USC's interim HC that I can't find where Coach O talks about the mistakes he has made,(at previous coaching stints, I think he referred directly to Ole Miss in it) and what he has learned from those mistakes, and how he has changed personally and how that reflects in his coaching over the years.
It's a great read if I could just find it.
In the debate whether USC would offer him HC job after his interim stint there was little question that he is a great recruiter.
There was no question that the players "had his back"; they clearly loved him, and it showed on the field.
There was no debate whether the team's performance improved, though from one article:
quote:
My summary analysis is he's a good man, highly respected by players and a true asset to the university.
But the question is this. Would USC keep him as head coach when many Trojan backers expect a bigger name, someone who's had success as a head coach?
One article that I can't find went so far as to put the question of culture forward.
That Coach O, how shall I say this, was too "working class", too "Louisiana" to relate to USC boosters(the money guys) culturally. (silly, huh)
Average fans were hoping he would stay even after they hired Sark, and USC has been in "spin" mode about why he left ever since.

From a comment to "Why USC should not hire Ed Orgeron as its head coach" from an NBC writer who wanted USC to hire either Sumlin or Boise State's coach.
Don't bother to read the article, its stupid, but a comment in response I found amusing, you guys might not:

Since 1-5 is a pipe dream, I’d say SC goes with #6. What I fear is that they hire someone with “SC ties”, which means Sark or del Rio- both would be really bad hires.
