Exactly. Well put. Most of these people ripping him probably don't even know the particulars of his past and how much that kind of stuff impacts a young human being. Sad. And he gave us so much...

Confession time:

When all this went down and was going down with TM7 and the drugs, I just thought, well not all that surprising - inner city kid and drugs, but that is life.

After seeing the interview, I feel completely sorry/ terrible for the kid and I was wrong - he made a mistake, yes, but just couldn't get out of it quick enough. He was right - all he had/ has was football, and it took all of this to show him his errors - that is just being young. Some of you will call me a sucker, but I don't see it that way.

We all make mistakes - daily - and we get more than just a few chances cause very few people or no body really knows about it. For him it was different. He made a mistake, but publicly and on a national level. Less room to spare.

Wish him nothing but the best.

Right now he's at the bottom. He missed his season and let down a state. He feels horrible. And probably won't get drafted that hight.

And to the guy right about this post. Win more people thought like you. Rationally

Tm7 cost us back to back NC.. Yeah I think he's that good he should live with with that for the rest of his pot smoking life

Well, he was a huge reason we were even there in the first place...

And unless he would've returned an INT. for a TD and shut out Bama on his own in the title game, we couldn't have won anyway with that offense not coming within 25 yards of getting in field goal range. The D did okay...only at the very end did they even give up a TD.

Bama played very well and LSU's coach turned in a real head scratcher.

He feels horrible, no doubt. But he's far from the bottom. he's workin out, probably having everything paid for, living a pretty decent life. he's about to make money that most of us won't get a chance to make even if its the league min. Now if he doesn't get drafted, doesn't get picked up, and ends up back on the dope or in jail, that'll be the bottom.

more quotes from the interview.

"I remember worrying about me playing in my home town and showing up and damn, I don't think I'm going to show up," he said. "I hope I show up. I hope I have a game like I did against Georgia or Auburn. And it really took me out of my preparation for the game. I didn't give up a touchdown but I gave up four or five passes. Passes when I knew they were going to run that route. I mean, I knew they were going to run that route. But I didn't prepare myself. I was worried about everything outside the game."

When Miles informed him in a 5:30 a.m. meeting that "you can't be a part of our family anymore" Mathieu said he began sobbing. He asked a school official to notify his parents because he couldn't bring himself to do it.

"There was nothing anybody could do at that point," Mathieu said, crying. "I had to accept the responsibility that I was never going to play for LSU again. The only school that believed in me. And I didn't even believe in them. I felt I was a loyalty person. Looking back, I didn't know anything about loyalty. I could talk it, but you know, walking it, was a whole different thing. And when you realize you're not loyal, that's what hurts the most. When you realize you lied to people, that's what hurts the most."

"I had to regain everything that I lost at LSU," Mathieu said. "I didn't want to go to another school and they call me the Honey Badger. They didn't know how hard I worked to become the Honey Badger. They don't know Tyrann. LSU is the only fan base that truly knows Tyrann. I couldn't play for another school. I just couldn't do it. I wouldn't have given my all playing for another school. I was only going to give my all for LSU."

"I fell back into the same trap that got me suspended," Mathieu said. "The entire September even into October, I'd go up the football dorms, to encourage those guys, and I'd go back to my room. Didn't go out. Didn't do anything. But then you just get comfortable. People just talking good about you. 'Oh, Tyrann, he's doing good. He's not missing classes.' And then you start to confuse yourself again. Everything is not good. I'm paying for school. They're not checking my classes, even though I take classes with football players. They're not looking at Tyrann anymore. When you surround yourself with the wrong people it's going to backfire every time."

Notably, can he stop smoking marijuana?

"Yes," he said. "I've stopped."

How?

"It's a mind thing," Mathieu said. "It's a mind thing. The rehab I've been to, the counseling I've been to, my mama and daddy jumping down my throat, Coach Miles popping by my apartment, none of that could stop me if I didn't want to stop. If I didn't want happiness for myself, nobody else can want it for me."

"When they call my phone, 'Nah, I'm with my girlfriend,' " Mathieu said. " 'I'm about to go work out. I've got something to do.' I'm growing up now. It ain't that I'm lying to them. I'm saving myself. Because I've got an outlook on life I know what's behind that door. I know why you're calling my phone. We've only got a few things in common. And it's not football."

"People see the Honey Badger and they see this fearless guy," Mathieu said. "This guy who's going to go balls to the wall and just give it his all. But off the field I was really quiet. I was really laid back, really humble. Once the Honey Badger took off, it's like, you have to be a different person. You have to be fearless walking around school. You have to have this mean look on your face, like every day is a football game."

"When you go to rehab and counseling, it's not about the physical person," he said. "It's about the person inside of you, the soul of you, the spirit of you. Many times I looked in the mirror and didn't see anything. Couldn't see anything. I didn't see anything in the mirror. It was me, but I didn't truly know my soul, my spirit.

"Some nights you have to think yourself to sleep rather than cry yourself to sleep. But it's truly a blessing to find that person in the mirror. I know who Tyrann is. Stop walking around like that. Put a smile on. You're a good person. You're a good kid. That's Tyrann. Not the Honey Badger. I'll turn it up on Saturday or Sundays. Hopefully Sundays. But that's not me off the field."

Mathieu knows some NFL teams will view him as high risk.

"I know what it feels like to be on the dark side," Mathieu said. "I know what it feels like every day not being able to sleep. Just thinking about football. I know what it feels like to hurt. I know what it feels like to lie to people. I know what it feels like for people not to trust you. I know my mistakes throw red flags up. But I want people to trust me. When I get back on that field, I don't want to get off. I don't ever want to leave this game again."

This! Exactly. How many of you, his detractors, would be able to air your dirty laundry at his age? Or any age for that matter? His failures are on constant public display.

Ever hear what Jesus says bout The Measuring Stick? U guys who judge harshly betta reconsider. And take that f'in plank outta ur eye! This is a good kid, who's only weakness was tryna escape a bit from his massive hurt thru a mild intoxicant. Something nearly everyone does from time to time, but ur balm may be something other than cannabis.

It was wrong b/c its against the rules, true. But this was not the betrayal like some of you might think it was. Besides, the most epic tales are always those bout redemption and rising from the ashes (no pun). Give him a few chances. He has earned it. He WILL make us proud again. Book it!

Tru, he has not hit the tru bottom yet. Hopefully he doesnt have to. If we support him we can affect that. If we trash him, well, we can affect that also.

U think he didn't read all that hate that so many broadcasted to him? Hell, people were tweeting him endlessly, trolling him. Human nature can have a very dark side indeed.

I disagree.

"Bottom" is a mental metaphor. It cannot be defining by "training and living well."

Watch the interview, if you have not seen it. To me, that seemed pretty close to bottom and battling a lot of regret and depression about how things have gone this past year.

Tru, I hear what u r saying. He has clearly gone down far, but the abyss of tragedy can geaux even further for him, and that's the drive for his discipline. Fact is it can get even worse.

Hell, one of his best buddies from St. Aug was found shot to death, laying in the middle of the street in the 9th ward on New Years Eve.

He has to build momentum, n keep it. And we can help that by supporting him. When he reaches the top again, I personally, will be able to say that I have.

I never understood the demonization of Mathieu. His primary sin was having an addiction to a substance that is nearly as popular as alcohol with a great portion of today's youth. He had extremely poor judgment but this could also be tied to his addiction to the drug. He paid for it by losing everything he had worked so hard to acquire.

Reading the excerpt of the interview I can't help but believe Mathieu is sincere in it. I hope he comes out of this stronger and with his head on straight and is able to attain a long and successful career in the NFL.

Remember, his cardinal sin was repeated drug usage. Not violence, stealing, fraud, etc. He had a drug problem. Tyrann was a hell of a Tiger and I think has the potential to be a great representative of LSU at the next level. The LSU fanbase should recognize that he made mistakes that cut his career here short and get behind him in his path to redemption. He has been nothing but apologetic and appreciative to the fans, the coaches, and the institution itself. Guy is a hell of a football player and I'd love to see him prove a lot of people wrong at the next level.
