I think most of the advice so far is solid, but food is a tricky one.
Baton Rouge has a few good restaurants, and a lot of highly regarded tourist traps. The only place in BR that consistently hits is Tony's Seafood, and it is deep in the hood.
The Chimes, Walk On's and other campus area places are decent, but you won't eat anything memorable there. Ruffino's can be great or very ho hum.
I would avoid places like TJ Ribs, which was awful the last time I went there, Tio Javi's, and Mike Anderson's.
If you have some time take a jog down Highway 190 to Krotz Springs and get some of the boudin from Billy's, or head to Scott and try Best Stop.
The best food you will eat will be what you are offered while Tailgaiting.

Plank Road has been compared to Beale Street in Memphis for its restaurants, music, and shopping. Be sure to take a slow driving tour after dark.

Ok, then take the Gosse Tete exit and visit Tony the Truckstop Tiger's cage. Now, THAT'S a cage!

Stay away from streets named after states. Also, no matter what anyone tells you, there isn't a hot chick on the other end of that glory hole in Coates
