I think a team might, and he was actually throwing over 90 in the SEC tourney

Not saying its a definite, but would it really suprise you if it happened?
getting drafted and getting a FA look is 2 different things. I dont think he'll get either though.
an "athlete"??? in what sense?
Posted on 6/2/09 at 11:06 am to Lester Earl
The guy was a quarterback for a 5A football team and also a middle infielder for an SEC team for 5 years.
That equals athlete. A guy who has athletic movement, and can be athletic on the mound..
There are a ton of pitchers out there pitching at high levels of baseball who are the most unathletic people you could ever meet. (I fall into this catagory, although I've seen some complete slap dicks pitch before)
It is a fact that scouts look at pitchers to see what kind of athletes they are and it isnt the norm.

This becomes irrelevant at the end of the draft (40-50)
The way the process works for MLB with that many guys being drafted. More often then not, the FA's in that draft class have better pro careers then the guys drafted. The only upside in getting drafted here is to say you got drafted. You're still getting a thousand bucks tops and you better play well from day 1 or you will be back at moms house by August

middle infielder? How many times has he played 2B or SS in 5 years?
any?
such a great athlete that he couldnt see the field? no offense to the guy...just saying.
Guess we have different definitions of athlete.

Not really. Not in Buzzy Haydel's case.

Mitchell- 2nd
DJ- 5-8th or lower (he has already said he wants to stay, so it may hurt his stock)
Coleman- 6-8th
Schimpf- 9-12th
Dean- 10-15th or lower

Heathcott makes it to campus?
Probably not, but it would be absolutely awesome if he does.

I thought he was gonna make it because of the injury?

I hadn't heard about Heathcott getting injured, Luquette from Newman is getting TJ surgery and Garrett the pitcher from Georgia had an injury that kept him out for about 6 weeks earlier this year that probably helped our chances of getting him on campus.

Brody Colvin--- 1-3rd
Zach Von Rosenburg--- 10-15th

That's what he signed as and is still listed on the roster as.
In no way am I trying to start shite, but I am actually curious to what you're definition of an athlete is?
Posted on 6/2/09 at 1:02 pm to BatonrougeCajun
Buzzy never played SS/2B, he is a Catcher/1st basemen/Pitcher
Posted on 6/2/09 at 1:08 pm to josh336
regardless, to say he isnt an athlete is a terrible statement
Posted on 6/2/09 at 1:16 pm to josh336
Buzzy was a middle infielder when Mainieri got here and was moved to first later.

JAred mitchell- athlete
DJ Lemahieu- athlete
Ryan Schimpf- athlete
Leon Landry- athlete
Mahtook- athlete
Buzzy Haydel- good HS athlete. Not a good college athlete or professional athlete
.

lol, dont know what to tell you if you think we could insert Haydel at 2B or SS and be ok..

Fair enough and I see what you are saying.
Me personally, I think the best way to judge someone's athletic ability is to watch how he plays basketball. Speed, agility, hand eye, short speed, quickness, jumping ability: great way to judge it.
As far as being a good high school athlete compared to a college athlete thats irrelevant. You're either an athlete or you aren't. Of course some of those guys like Jared Mitchell are freak athletes, but I wouldnt discount Buzzy.
Again, they're are pitchers out there that can barely walk with out tripping themselves, whose only athletic ability is having a loose arm.
I am not disagreeing with you. I am just making it relevant as to why Buzzy could get a look at pitching at the pro level.

no, its really not.
there are different levels, obviously
take your basketball as example:
there are good athletes that play in pickup games at the local YMCA, but you cant compare them to a college basketball athlete and especially a pro basketball athlete.
Against you, and me, and the 35 yr old father of 2, they are great athletes. But thats where it ends.
Buzzy was a great HS; he is a marginal college athlete. That's why he hasnt played, and when he has gotten a lot of starts, like his SOPH year, he didnt do anything.
He's not even on the level of a guy like Ochinko, who can play multiple positions as well as hold down a starting spot and actually produce.

which doesn't mean shite, because as long as they can throw hard, it doesnt matter what kind of athlete they are. Which is why Buzzy has little going for him as far as the "athlete" argument goes.

Again, I'm not saying you're wrong, our opinions just differ. You're talking about the difference between an athlete and a freak athlete.
I am strictly talking about the difference between a complete non athlete and an athlete. you know they guy who has the beer gut but still absolutely dominates in pickup basketball and flag football games. He's an athlete. The guy who, while may be jacked and in great shape, moves very slow and awkwardly, can't really catch, throw, shoot, and has no agility is a non athlete. (I think we can both agree that we know people who fit into both catogories)
Scouts do look for pitchers who can be athletic on the mound and defend their position well. Thats where it becomes relevant. Again, I'm not saying that it's even likely. Just dont be suprised if it does happen.
