Don't flame LSU or former LSU players. Fair warning.

Russell has several things working against him to be considered the best in the eyes of many Tiger fans...

- he had moments of pretty bad play during his first season playing when he split time with Randall (may not all be his fault)

- he wasn't considered "great" by the national media, or other fans, until the last half of his last season, whereas Hodson was 1st team All-SEC for 4 years

- he didn't have a 4th year to break some of the career records

- he's not seen as a die-hard Tiger or emotional leader by the fans, like Rohan, and the BamaBoy thing is seen as a big negative

I'm not going to make a race argument because of the amount of support Rohan gets from LSU fans...but that might be a factor of a handful of Tiger fans

You seem to be one of those that feels the need to tow the Jamarcus line in a big way. I think what you might want to consider is that there is a fair, rightful, and honored place for Russell in LSU history without making the jump of calling him the best ever.

That being said, he never had much opportunity to develop touch or acuracy and that was never his strong points.

How do you figure he had no accuracy with stats like these?

quote:

67.8% 3129 yds 9.1 ypa 28/8 Td/Int 167.03 RAT

not only did he complete damn near 70% of his passes but he did it at about 10 yards per.

Thanks Edge.

As far as JRuss being a bust, he's a #1 draft pick, so if he's not a all star he'll be a bust. That being said he's got lots of potential and looked pretty good in the pre-season so far. Like I said before, he suffered with Saban starting Randall (SO DAMN STUPID) At this point, Stafford might have more PT than JR or he's very close. He just needs more experience in actual game time.

I don't know. I was only at the f'n games and watched him fling it over guys heads when they were wide open and throw it at WR's feet when trying to put touch on the ball. Stats ain't everything ya know.

If you read my whole post instead of pulling out one little sentence you would have seen me say that he made some great, game winning throws that other QB's couldn't make, but he also missed on some throws that almost any other QB could. I'm a huge JRuss fan, and I take the good with the bad. And that's it, he had good and bad, but I supported him through it all.

Obviously Matt Leinart, Alex Smith, VY, and Matt Ryan had no accuracy either.

if 67% ain't good enough for you to consider a QB accurate, what the hell do you consider accurate?

JR fit the ball in spots other QBs couldn't, and often these windows didn't lead to the WR being led

but he completed a VERY high rate of his passes at an INSANE yards per attempt

Stats ain't everything. Is his completion rate good? No, it's down right great. That being said, no one has addressed the fact that he made a lot of bad passes at guys feet or way over their head. He made some great throws through tight holes also, but he made some that made you scratch your head also.

All QBs make bad passes sometimes.

There is a reason we haven't seen a QB with a 90% completion rate.

just like 95% of it

and 67% is really, really good

he fit balls into spots other QBs couldn't, and sometimes that led to bad passes

and sometimes he just made bad passes. but every QB does this. ro did it. mauck did it (a lot). flynn did it (a lot)

ut he made some that made you scratch your head also.

like every other QB you could compare him to

if you go back and watch highlights you'll find that Russell was phenomenal at hitting horizontal plays, many of which were in very tight spots. He was pretty average on vertical routes that required more touch and air. Some of this probably falls on Jimbo who tried to improve this aspect of his game and may have messed him up more than he helped.

Agreed, but some of JR's were when there was no pressure to a guy who had run a five yard curl and JRuss thows it three feet above the guys head. It happened in the Auburn game twice.

Then again, there was a 3rd and 20 against Tenn when he threw the ball 25 yards to Early for a first down.

There was good and bad, but some of his bad left you saying why was he so far off on that, while his good left you saying that was amazing. More so than other QB's.

Hey Suntiger and diablo, don't try to convince slowfloblow, or drexel that Russell was not the greatest Qb to ever play the game. I'm sure they still both sleep in their Jamarcus footie pajamas! Plus, judging by the ridiculous amount of posts that slowblow has, he has no life and thinks he owns this board and his view is the only correct one. If he don't like any other take on Russell that does'nt kiss his arse, frick him.
