why? he IS legendary

You seem to be one of those that feels the need to tow the Jamarcus line in a big way. I think what you might want to consider is that there is a fair, rightful, and honored place for Russell in LSU history without making the jump of calling him the best ever.
He'll be better than Matt Stafford is, college or pro. Talk about busts. Jeez.....

Also, anybody who doesn't think JaMarcus Russell was the greatest QB in LSU history is a moron.

I just don't agree. Most talented? Overwhelmingly yes. Best ever? I think that we would have needed to have him play his senior year to know for sure. Just my opinion.....
OK, how about comparing their stats against the three, four, or five best defenses that they faced all year in 2001 and 2006, respecyively? I am not enough of a stats person to dig that up myself. Any possible way I can trouble you to dig it up for me??
I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of "in between" when it comes to opinions about Jamarcus Russell on this board. Some of you cite his overwhelming talent and NFL draft stock as evidence that he is the greatest QB in LSU history. Others seem to zero in on every miscue that he had during his tenure at LSU, holding him accountable for things that you conveniently ignore about our other QB's past and present.

The truth, as always, is somewhere in between.

My opinion is that Russell is certainly the most talented QB to ever play at LSU. He is also one of the most underrated clutch performers in the history of the program. I counted a total of 4 4th quarter come-from-behind wins that he engineered and I may be forgetting a few. He was also the UNQUESTIONED leader of that team in 2005 and 2006 as evidenced by the fact that none of the players, at least publicly, supported giving Flynn even the possibility of being the QB in 2006 after the Peach Bowl in 2005.

That being said, he is in my mind a step and a half shy of being the greatest QB in school history. My feeling is that Rohan Davey was a more effective QB than Jamarcus was at the college level. In all fairness, Jamarcus had more NFL talent at receiver to work with in Craig Davis, Dwayne Bowe, and Early Doucet, but Rohan had Josh Reed who was far better at the college level than either of those three. I think that Rohan was better at executing Jimbo Fisher's offense than was Jamarcus. He also responded better against quality defenses, although that had a lot to do with Josh Reed. It is undeniable that Jamarcus Russell came up short against the two best defenses he faced all year in 2006.

The thing is, it is tough to fairly compare the two because Rohan really only had one solid year as the starting QB at LSU. If Ro had had three years with Jimbo as the OC, I think he would have made a run at being the best QB in school history. Likewise, I think that if Jamarcus had stayed for his senior year with Gary Crowton calling the plays (Jimbo’s performances were becoming stale by the time he left for FSU), Jamarcus might have taken the distinction for himself. I have submitted to the notion that both QB's are probably among the greatest "might have been's" at QB in LSU history. They both flexed their talent with the right offense and the right players around them but neither played long enough to be called the best ever at LSU. I still to this day bestow that distinction on Bert Jones and Tommy Hodson.

Not that there isn't enough discussion about this already on this board but I hadn't yet chimed in. Discuss.....

Found a cool new site.....

.....this guy apparently does daily updates on anything LSU related, but mostly recruiting for football. Looks like he pretty well knows his stuff. Anyway, I attached the link below. Enjoy.....

Thank you so much for this reponse.....it was dead on. My God, you wonder what people are thinking sometimes.

Sorry, dude, but I'm going to have to say that you are the retarded idiot here. If the thought of even attempting to directly contact a recruit, unless you are a coach/admin or personally know the kid, has ever crossed your mind then you need to get a f#cking life RIGHT NOW. You do not speak for the school or the for the team when you take initiative like this.....you are only showing that you are a complete and total creep with nothing better to do than stalk high school teenagers because you want them to play football for your school.

Jeez, some of you people just need to get a f#cking clue.
Wow, I'm going to steal a line from a favorite movie of mine and send it out to you and every other LSU fan on this board that feels slighted on a daily basis by ESPN, CNN, Sports Illustrated, the AP, and virtually every other national media outlet in this country:

The next time you feel that LSU is being underappreciated or belittled in any way by the media, I suggest that you purchase two large wooden planks from a local hardware store, erect a giant cross in your back yard, crawl your oversensitive a$$ up that pretty new cross, and NAIL YOURSELF TO IT. I'll follow up right behind and spray paint the whole display purple and gold just to make sure that your grievances are sufficiently seen and acknowledged by all.

Being a "realist" or a "pessimist" should not apply to three weeks before the season. Is having high expectations that get dashed worse than conning yourself into suppressing those expectations and being "satisfied"?

Oooooooh, philisophical discourse planted on LSU football talk. Most interesting.....

quote:

LSU has top 5 talent.

Talent is what I will have my eye on the most this coming season. Is Miles truly equaling or even bettering his predecessors accomplishments on the recruiting trail? This in my mind is the number one question long term for the LSU football program.

quote:

LSU should win every game this year except Florida and possibly Georgia (each of whom have talent on par and slightly more experience).

Geeez, you're tough. So many loseable games to SEC teams with less talent but that might catch us napping coming off of a big win. Not sure I agree here.

quote:

LSU is far more talented than Auburn. Hence LSU should win.

Again, that has never prevented us from losing this game in the past. That aside, I really think that we win the game at Auburn. I look at college football from a somewhat holistic perspective and the home team is going to have to lose a game in this series eventually.

Bold pick. I hope you're right but I have my doubts.
We've had a better team than them plenty of times before and still managed to lose. But I agree, for the first time in a while I think we will simply overwhelm them with superior talent. Auburn's continued assistant coaching carrousel is what motivates me the most about possibly winning this game.....
I know.....I didn't realize it until after my first response. Anyway, any thoughts on the actual topic of the post or are we going to play Scrabble instead???
Just figured it out and fixed it....."bet" was supposed to be "beat" in the Subject. Ooops.
Not ready to bet on it yet.....just a hunch.
Playing at Auburn has been painful the last 4 tries but think about this.....the home team has not lost a game in this series since 1999. That streak HAS to end eventually. Unfortunately, I think we will probably trade surprise wins over Auburn and Georgia this year for a couple of ball breakers......maybe Ole Miss and South Carolina.

re: The Legend of Cecil Collins...

How about Cecil Collins vs. Bill Brasky?????

Anyway, to answer what I think your question is.....I may be an unbelievable LSU homer but my true and honest-to-God belief is that if Cecil Collins had had 3 unbroken years as the starting tailback at LSU, he would have taken his place with Herschel Walker and Bo Jackson as one of the greatest running backs to ever play college football. To this day, he is hands down the most talented football player that I have ever seen play in person. The details of his tragic personal life make all of that seem insignificant but I still find myself wondering sometimes what might have been with that guy. Such a shame.....
You beat me to it!! The Auburn game in 1997 stands as the loudest that I can ever rememeber that stadium getting. Even though we lost, that was probably the single most entertaining football game that I have ever attended. I had nothing left when we walked back to the dorms that night.
