If this (CBS chat) doesn't excite LSU fans, I don't know what will

agree that LM should hold RS back for his own good, and keep the cat in the bag as long as you can.
Well,I think he should get a few carries every game..
If you wait until the perfect time, it won't happen the way you planned it... Kid will be too nervous..
Tebow was worked in slowly, but every game he played.... a player needs to get comfortable playing in front of big crowds and the speed of the game....experience is a must
If you are going to burn the Red shirt, let him play quality snaps.. Min. 5-7 IMO

As a Cy Creek graduate from a few years ago, I would gladly claim Russell Shepard. Unfortunately, he attended Cy Ridge. Honest mistake from Spencer.I enjoy his football analysis.

quote:Agreed. Even the players (Charles Scott was one that I remember) were saying that Jefferson wasn't ready. If we had played Jefferson too early and he had played poorly, all that would have done is hurt his self-confidence and expose him to the same "fan" hatred that JL went through.
Danielson said it's hard to say this about coaches, but he thought Miles "lost his team" last year by sticking too long with Jarrett Lee at quarterback
I respect his opinion but disagree with Gary Danielson on this point. Hatch and Lee were both nicked up during the season. Jefferson was a true freshman and as such hadn’t had a lot of time to get acclimated to the system and to college play. I just don’t think the coaches thought he was ready. They may have been hesitant to throw him into a situation he wasn’t ready for. They got to see him every day in practice. If he had been clearly better than the other two we would have seen him play more.

Les had no good options...RP cost us 2 years at the QB depth/development

Doesn't Spencer live in Houston?
I took it to mean that he lives in the Cy Creek area, and was able to go watch Shep play.

well les is good at holding a player back for the right time to play him. look at trindon he is still waiting on the right time to play him . when he puts him in the whole stadium and everyone watching on tv and the team we are playing knows he is getting the ball. so what chance does he have to do anything , none!!!!

I cannot agree with Danielson that Russell Shepard could get "too much" playing time even if that playing time comes as a RB or slot receiver. I like Danielson, but that is a ridiculous statement. Has Shepard suddenly forgotten how to run with the football in his hands because he is a freshman in college? Retarded. Miles wants to keep Shepard in his pocket? For what reason? LSU is saving Shepard? To surprise somebody? Give me a break. Every coaching staff LSU will face this season knows who Shepard is. Once he takes the field, it won't be to any opponent's surprise.
However, I do agree with Danielson's statement that LSU D-line is the weak link. That is why LSU needs to play Downs, Aghayere and Edwards more. I suppose Miles should keep those guys in his pocket too?
This notion that because players are true freshmen or redshirt freshmen, thus not ready to play is bunk. If they have the ability to perform better than the guys with more experience, then get them on the field.
Where would LSU's baseball team have wound up this past season if Mainieri had not been willing to insert freshmen in the lineup? This is one area where Miles needs to follow Mainieri's approach.

I think this is a good article, I do. I think it breathes hope into some absolutely atrocious fans (most of the short-memory a$$holes on here) that expect perfection out of the gate. Having said that, Shepard better not be the difference in THIS season or we are in trouble as Danielson states. Shepard is, by all accounts, dynamic and a great leader along with being a terrific talent, but this league is not built for freshmen. I'm not saying freshmen can't have an impact, I'm just saying you better not be counting the division, conference, or national championships on their account. (Don't bother thowing out people like Justin Vincent...he certainly impacted the SEC Championship Game, but the regular season was won in large part by other means).
There is a time and place for Shep, but the fans that are/were begging for his appearance and think that he should be out there because he is "Shepard" are sadly mistaken. This team will win or lose as a result of getting better in all aspects of the game, not at one position over x number of plays.
There are plenty of things to complain about after game one, but I think that those who dwell on negatives are losing sight of what game one really was....game one, on the road, against what will prove to be a quality opponent. I would have been excited as hell had it been perfect, but who wants to be peaking in September? I'm also going to be thoroughly disappointed if we haven't improved greately by game 3. Give it some time. Quit being Maximus and SFP and start being real fans.
Carl, great article. I appreciate the candidness with which you reported statements and opinions. Keep up the good work...and thanks for breathing a little more life into a mostly lost group of fans (not everyone, just the a$$holes out there who think they know it all).
