Thoughts on Back Up QB competition going into 2021

Brennan will be the starter going into next season.
To be fair it’s hard to judge a player on such few games.
Max seemed to be the backup at the start of the year. What changed?
Really just curious what the coaches saw that made them want to start TJ over Max.
I think both have show flashes of greatness and for being freshman both played pretty well all things considered. With good-to-elite oline play and more experience both could be good-to-great starters.
To me neither has really seperated themselves as the clear cut. They both have different games. I think it’s going to come down to development obviously but more than that it’ll come down to direction of scheme. Max can move better and his football/qb iq seems to be higher. TJ seems to have a ceiling that is higher but also a much lower floor.

I wouldn't bank on Brennan being the automatic starter

TJ has completed 52% of passes since his first start vs South carolina.
pretty simple. HE isn't accurate and he does not make good decisions with the ball.

Exactly. So why would they turn to TJ over Max when going into the beginning of the season it seemed like Max was the 2nd QB.

My hunch is that he was slightly better in practice that week and then was so good against USCe that it forced their hand. But that's just a guess on my part.

I don’t think they will

They still aren’t sure if he will be able to play next year.

You should know by now why Finley was thrown in there over Johnson. I wont elaborate on it, but it’s pretty easy to read the situation when you think about it.

Look at the two games that Finley excelled in - USC and Arkansas. We were able to run the ball and control the game. The pressure wasn’t all on Finley to carry the offense. In this role, he played very well, was composed and made solid reads. He looked ahead of the curve, unlike the games where the pressure was on him to carry the offense.
Think about how weekly practice works. It’s a controlled environment where guys aren’t going hard 1s vs 1s for long stretches. It’s about planning and prep. Based on what we saw vs USC and Arkansas, I can absolutely see how Finley would look good in that setting. His big arm is also attractive, of course. Ensminger loves to take downfield shots, so I can definitely see why he would be interested. Add this to Finley playing great in his first start, and I’m not surprised that the staff stuck with him as a starter for a while.
That said, I think they should have moved to Johnson for the Bama game and they should have been rotating more when it mattered in the A&M and Auburn games.

According to who?

Max was the one warming up in the Missouri game when they though Brennan may be out for the rest of the game.

Maybe Max had the best week of practice.
Now back to who was #2 at the beginning of the year. Who said which QB was #2?

They haven't.
No one knows who will emerge as the starter after a few months of intense practice.
Brennan may have plateaued. Johnson may pass him.
If you judge them solely on which QB has improved the most since they committed to LSU, Finley would win hands down.
Several Rant experts told us that Finley, based on his HS performance, would never get a scholarship to LSU.
Remember his first day at practice he was pretty inaccurate. Now not so much. His passes have been on target. His problem seems to be seeing the receiver and picking a window to hit him, and putting touch on his passes.
Hopefully he will put in the hours in the film room, work all summer, and live up to his potential.
He has the best arm and throws a beautiful pass.
Its up to Finley and his work ethic.

sure maybe and if that's true i don't have a total issue with it. None of us have any idea how they looked in practice. if it was close, it's not the craziest idea to go with the guy the locker room supports. now if max has been way better the whole time then that's a big issue.

Brennan- starter, Johnson- Backup, Nussmeier-3rd/Redshirt, Finley- Transfer out.

It will be a three way battle in the spring and fall camps. Then a starter will be named. I can easily see any of the three getting the job honestly. Brennan has been in the program for going on his 5th season and looked good when he was playing. Finley and Johnson have shown flashes but both still need to develop more and I suspect it will be a new OC evaluating them so the competition will be wide open.

4-way. Nussmeier is an early enrollee and he looks damn good playing top competition in Texas. I wouldn’t bet on him winning the job, but he’s going to be in the mix and turning heads.

I kind of think Nuss ends up succeeding Brennan over Max in 2 years. that will be a tough qb battle

What. Myles will be the starter. Who is the backup I’m really not sure but this wins hands down I don’t buy. From what I witnessed when Finley was QB was he is still inaccurate and rarely hits his targets on the run. He panics in the pocket even when there is no pressure. But Finley on the positive side has still played relatively well in the South Carolina game and played pretty good in other games as a freshman. It appears max plays better under pressure and throws the ball relatively well also but he is a freshman and I noticed he doesn’t scan the field for receivers being open when the play was for a certain player . FRESHMEN have their faults which will be ironed out eventually such as searching for the open man and being able to read a defense, but to say one has so much more potential than the other is complete bullshite.
