To a certain extent, yes

Everyone is selfish period. I agree with this.

Ok then. Man up and actually explain how not taking your hat off during the anthem is the equivalent of communism. Do you even know what communism is? If you did, I think you'd see how stupid your statement is.
I guarantee you don't have an intelligent answer to back up your statement.

This is a custom, and a custom only. Everyone upset about people not removing their hats need to get the frick over it, because new customs are born everyday and old ones are killed every day.
People used to take off their cap when a lady walked into a room too. It used to be that if you saw a puddle, you'd take your jacket off and allow a lady to step on it. People decide the meanings of the events and their relative importance. The tipping of a cap used to mean something, because men used to wear hats all the time. In the 30s or 40s, it used to be considered rude and underdressed to not be wearing a hat or a tie.
Customs change. Etiquette is an everchanging, everbreathing thing.
Removing one's hat is a custom, and it means absolutely nothing. It says nothing about one's upbringing, one's devotion to the country, or one's love of America. the only thing it shows is one's willingness to participate in a custom. It's ludicrous to me to think that a person who removes their hat or puts their hand on their heart as a "show" of patriotism, could actually be considered more "patriotic" than others based on that one act. It would be the same thing as saying a person who knelt and put their hands together at mass was more holy than a person who sat there and prayed silently at church.
Come on. You guys are smarter than this.
Traditions change. look at how quickly the traditions of Tiger Stadium have changed recently. Piped in shitty country music songs, two refrains of the alma mater- stuff changes yearly.

You are right, I am wrong. Leave your hat on.

Actually, no. What does it say? I'm interested to know.

First let me say I do remove my hat because that is what I was taught to do while growing up; however, as a veteran who thinks it shows disrespect if people don't, can you tell me why any military personell, police or even the color gaurd for that matter dont remove their hat's during the National Anthem?
Because they are in uniform rendering a salute to the flag and a salute can be rendered with the hat on as it is part of the uniform. And if you are a veteran I would expect you to know that.

bullshite. There are many acts of selflessness that occur every day.

That's just what some of you don't get. Your poor decisions and actions deserve being demeaned. Why do you think you should be able to choose any behavior you deem appropriate, and not be criticized or demeaned? It's pathetic that we are becoming a nation where people want to make choices, but not have any consequences.

It says hat removal by the proletariat during the cold Russian winter shows devotion to the Communist cause.

my favorite part of this thread is how the PoliBoard regulars are absolutely destroying these retards. I wish they would come to the PB.

This.
And if you are under arms (packing heat) you do not have to remove your hat. (if I remember correctly)

I say each to his/her own. What someone decides to do is their individual right. While I may not agree with their actions, it's still their right to do as they so desire. Back in '75 I was in the PMac for a basketball game. During the playing of the National Anthem, three blacks in front of us sat through the playing of the anthem. While I may have not agreed on their stance of why they chose to sit, it was their right to do so.
