I truly don't understand people getting hung up on publicly "naming a starter". So long as whoever starts is adequately prepared, who gives a shite?

I agree

It doesn’t matter. Coaches could very well know but don’t wanna say. Whatever is gonna happen is gonna happen.

Well, it's a problem if it's McMillan. He's not a potential NFL QB and it would signal we won't be able to rely on the QB position to win games.

It would also mean none of the other 3 guys are at that point either.

I know this isn't popular, and I get why... however I think under certain circumstances it is a viable way to go.

Firstly, the circumstances: late in fall no QB has separated himself clearly.

Secondly, the method: for the first half of the season (or quarter) you name a starter for each game. This would be between TWO QBs, not 4.

Pros:
- keep opponent guessing as far as game planning
- keeps competition going
- can pick QB for best game per opponent (e.g. DT QB when best, Pro when best)
- the "true starter" earns it with game performance, not practice (the B. Harris syndrome)
- improves depth

Cons:
- can hurt development due to reps
- can limit game planning (if you plan based on two types of QBs)
- hurt feelings
- can really hurt the other positions, sometimes. Especially WRs, some OL.
