The Overtime Rules Are Stupid

I think they need to skip the coinflip, and let them play sudden death from the same spot where the game ended. You still take a stoppage like you do between quarters, but you don't change possession or where the ball is placed.
If you kick a FG as time expires, then you are kicking off to start OT.
If you score a TD with little time left, you might want to go for 2 because you are going to kick off.
If the other team ties it up with a minute left, there's no need to rush because you will keep possession at the same spot if time runs out.
It's simple and and it's fair. What they are doing now in both college and pros is just ridiculous.

I have said this forever

how is sudden death fair? Both teams should have the same amount of possessions in OT

k keep me posted. they are better than old rules. more prime possessions that get tougher and tougher.
as far as NFL
anybody thinking the modern NFL rules are not better than the old sudden death BS that was not fair is a dumbass.

Then why don't we do this at halftime?

It's fair because your fate doesn't rely on a coin flip. Your fate is based on what you did in the 2nd half. You start exactly where the 4th quarter ended. If you have it first and 10 from your 30 when time expires, then you have it first and 10 from your 30 to start overtime.

I don’t love the OT rules, but your proposal sucks arse . Hard pass

So then basically no one would try to win the game as time expired. Good bye last sec FGs to win. Hail Mary miracles. Taking risks to win. Etc. great idea...no thank you

And play continues with any advantage that was gained would be earned on the field.

Theoretically, you could. But as one teams starts with possession in the first half, It seems unneeded.

Your fate doesn’t rely on a coin flip in college. They both get possessions. In the NFL maybe but you still have to move the length of the field

Of course they would. There would be more strategy as they would have to decide to play for a tie and kickoff or win the game at the end of regulation.

sudden death in OT is not fair
it is a good thing you are not on the rules committee

So, the team that wins the toss and always elects to go on defense first doesn't have a significant advantage?

most every team plays defense when they win they coin flip in OT, that way you know what you have to match to continue in OT or to win knowing how many points the other team scores
This advantage they get by winning the flip and choosing defense.

Yes. Because that gives you a significant advantage, an advantage that came from a coin flip. That's why every team does that.

you still haven't said why you believe sudden death is fair

Because the game doesn't change on a coin flip. Everyone knows that the game will continue if it ends tied, and if it does and you are in a tough situation because your tied it up late, that is the situation you put yourself in. You didn't get there on a coin flip. You got there on the basis of your play.
