I guess if you like cherry picking.. MM's last year at Murray State was only there best season ever (31-3 / 18-0 in conference).. Steve Prohm has followed that up with a 17-15 & 12-20 seasons and a .500 conference record.

Has MM worked out no, but was he a terrible hire at the time no.

We should really look into hiring Gregg Marshall if we do fire McMahon. That guy is just a proven winner. and has served his time.

I agree - he will - it seems to upset folks to say it but it's not an endorsement or a stand - I just don't think Scott's going to fire him for me it just comes down to that.

Anyone with a functioning brain knows that men's basketball is the second most popular sport in the nation. Most sports fans couldn't tell you who won the college world series last year.

I do find a surprising naivety among some of our fans as to the popularity of college baseball outside or our cocoon down here. What we have here is special and fairly unique and is to be admired and celebrated IMHO, but is definitely not the case in the vast majority of the rest of the country.

Even women's basketball which is routinely lampooned here, is more popular nationally as indicated by both attendance figures and tv ratings.

Do you have some info in that regard Mad?

Either way - that might change things - I guess it depends on who would be hired and if there was a mandate by those facilitating his hire in regard to the men's head basketball coaching position.

I can tell you the big hoops booster that I know very well would not be a person who would be demanding such a mandate.

Nothing I’d consider solid but in that scenario MM is a goner. Just a hypothetical though

The only reason I would say there is a chance is because not making a move would kind of go against Woodward's prior actions. He's generally been pretty quick to make a move when things are going south.

His first year as AD was 2019. After the football championship he gave O an extension. Only 1.5 bad seasons later the 2019 COY was let go.

Nikki Fargas had not been completely awful in her 8 seasons at LSU before Woodward became AD. 6 NCAAT appearances in those 8 years. She just had not met the standard of success previously set and the program was backsliding. Still, in her first full season with Woodward as AD she was 20-10 and likely would have made the NCAAT had it not been canceled due to covid. The next year she had a losing record and was fired.

That was somewhat the same for Mainieri. He went to the CWS finals in 2017. He was in the process of leading LSU to a super regional in 2019 when Woodward got the job that spring. The next season was shortened to 17 before SEC play even began. By late 2021 it was announced Mainieri was "retiring". (really, he was being nudged out).

In all instances he made a quick decision once it was clear those programs were declining. Here, McMahon has never "ascended". He immediately sunk the program to the gutter in year 1. He had a brief moment of success last year in SEC play, but this year looks likely to finish at the bottom of the SEC again. O, Fargas, and Maineri had accomplished WAY more at LSU than McMahon. Yet, that wasn't enough to save them once the program started sliding.

(P.S. When hiring the next basketball coach an automatic disqualifier should be if they are from Oak Ridge, TN. Both McMahon and Nikki Fargas are from there. I'm sure it is a lovely place. But it's not a place that produces great LSU basketball coaches)

I mean, if we had any coverage at all of men's hoops someone might ask him? But I doubt anyone in our media community has ever dared.
